Chad Ryan - Photojournalist

Chad Ryan - Photojournalist I make pictures. Some people say they're decent. I edit pictures for the Tampa Bay Rays. The Rays say my editing is decent. I think that's decent.

I'm the Executive Multimedia Editor for Fighting Irish Preview. Chad Ryan is an award-winning maker of pictures, both still and moving. He is a husband, father, Great Lakes fisherman, amateur BBQ pit boss, UTV off-road driver, and old school Kung Fu movie aficionado. Chad's photographs have been published in the pages of Sports Illustrated, The Sporting News, ESPN The Magazine, USA Today, The Bost

on Globe, The New York Times and numerous other publications and websites around the world. Chad is also the remote photo editor for the Tampa Bay Rays major league baseball team, team photographer for the Fort Wayne Komets ECHL hockey team and Executive Multimedia Editor for Fighting Irish Preview, a website dedicated to the coverage of Notre Dame Football. While he feels at home on the sidelines, in the dugout or just about any place sports happen, Chad also is very capable in the studio setting, making dramatic sports portraits and business portraits both indoors and outdoors with natural and studio light.

A story in five frames.

Javier Armas deserved that goal. Hit that post flush. But Jayden Smith had his back. Smith had been so close a few times early on but finally got his chance near the end of the first half and buried it. He’s not bad in the celly department either.

Both goals last night were beauties, but this one … The saying “Hang it in the Louvre” is overdone these days, but this one should be in there. If not every book on How to Football (Soccer).

My job is to EDIT the photos, but yeah, I took a camera with me. Originally I planned to setup a remote camera or two as a test. My little diva dog had other ideas for my time before I left the house. No rigging gear made the trip. I wasn’t asked to set any remotes, so that was a “me” thing. But it’s been a great trip either way.

Weather’s not bad here in Motown. And I had a fantastic sushi lunch with Rays photographer Davida Franklin. Not a bad day to prep for Game 132 of the season.

I thoroughly enjoyed seeing all the football pictures from the many talented photographs I know who shot week 1 of the new high school season. I wish I could be out on the sidelines with you. It looks like sometime in October will be my first opportunity to get to a high school game. Baseball and HS marching band rule my life for the next few months.

As for college football, I've got a game coming up on my schedule at a place where people like to wear foam cheese hats on Sundays, but I won't get to spend a lot of time on college sidelines until well into November. So, until then I will live vicariously through my friends with cameras.

**Update: I just remembered HS reserve teams play on Mondays, and I do have two Monday evenings in September off.

Last night was another double dipper for me. Worked a 4pm Rays game then bolted over to Ruoff Mortgage Stadium just in time to shoot the 7:30pm Fort Wayne FC vs. Union Omaha match in the rain.

The result didn’t go our way last night in a 2-0 loss to the top team in USL League One. The scoreless first half felt we were watching two of the best teams in the league going at it. A couple of defensive slips and missed big offensive opportunities in the second half cost us. Those things are fixable. If the club can get through this stretch of tough matches with some points in the standings, there’s still a solid chance to make the playoffs.

Thousands of high school kids across Indiana are kicking off the marching marathon that for many will take them all the way through the middle of November. Homestead Bands SpartanAlliance officially opened its band camp for the 2026 show this week. The musicians and guard performers are busy learning pages and pages of drill and routines as well as putting it all together with their music. Good luck to all the bands, young musicians, performers and their directors on the new season.
