There are still giants on the earth. Not terrible, dangerous giants, but ones that inspire awe. Ones that can make you feel at home. A place of light and glory and stillness. Hushed sounds of reverence for the beings that surround you. A place to share. A place to wander. A place to invite you to reach. Like the branches above grow into something spectacular. Whatever that means. And it doesn't come all at once. Some of these giants have been slowly steadily reaching for over one thousand years. We'll see where I can get in my time.

Toketee Falls. One of the more unique waterfalls I have seen. The North Umpqua River flows through layers of basaltic rock from former lava flows. The falls go through a series of plunge pools ending in this finale. A column of water rushing down over columns of basaltic rock. As lava cooled the crystalline structure in this basalt rock formed a hexagonal structure that resulted in these sturdy pillars of stone. Not even this tough stone can stand up to the relentless flow of a river. Slowly the water tears the stone apart. Sometimes things that seem like they never will change slowly do. Or sometimes quickly give way after long periods of resistance. In some ways you want to be like the stone, steadfast and unyielding. But other times you want to be the river. Persistent and patient. Both are beautiful, both play a role in this scene. Sometimes we just have to be both. And go with the flow no matter what. Sometimes we don't have a choice, but resistance seems a little futile too, and somehow necessary.
