This next week I will be muting my regular posts in order to . Change needs to happen, and it’s crucial to be giving space to and amplifying BIPOC voices right now.
It is on all of us, especially those of us with tremendous privilege, to do something. It is not enough to quietly disagree with what is happening and to say you’re not racist, but then leave all of the heavy lifting to people of color. Everyone starts somewhere, including myself. As a white person, learning about what modern-day racism looks like and how we play a role is a crucial first step.
Here are some ways you personally can make a difference: Support black businesses and black artists. Educate yourself on black history, systematic oppression, and privilege. Share what you’re learning, even when (or perhaps especially when!) it’s uncomfortable. Listen to what the black community is asking for and amplify their voices. Don’t call the police on black people who are doing nothing wrong. Donate to organizations who are making positive change in communities of color.
Do some self-reflection to recognize what biases you hold (we ALL have them!) and how they impact how you move about the world. Recognize any harm that you might have caused and apologize when you are wrong.
I don’t have all of the answers, but I do know that our country is hurting, and it doesn’t feel right to continue to stay silent in hopes of not making anyone feel uncomfortable.
WE SHOULD BE UNCOMFORTABLE.
We must use our platform, our power, and our privilege to make a positive change in our communities. Silence is not an option.
WE MUST DO BETTER.
