FREE COLOR THEORY EDITING GUIDE ⬇️

A few years ago, I remember so many moments where I was nearly in tears, or wanting to rip my hair out.. sometimes both, all because I was obsessed with the idea of a consistent editing style.

I thought that I had to forge the same colors to work across every single shoot.

Anyways… BORRRRIINNNNGGGGGGG!!!

How do you think movies make you feel so much?

Can you imagine if every scene was edited the same way — the one where they’re skinny dipping after dusk, vs. the one where they’re soaking in golden light, wild and in love, vs. the one where she’s left heartbroken on her front steps in the rain?

It would ruin the whole story.

That’s why color grading is such a big deal in film… they literally hire professional colorists just to do that one job.

And color grading should be just as important in your work, too.

In each of these images, I leaned into the LIGHT, the mood, and the emotion.

I used oranges and pinks to convey the warmth of love, romance, yourh.

I used blues and purples to tap into nostalgia and excitement.

I used reds to bring in intimacy.

I used ANALOGOUS colors in the highlights and shadows to create an immersive effect that just melts you into the image.

If you want to learn more about how to use color this way, drop a comment with the world COLOR — and I’ll send you my Color Grading 101 Guide !!! I think this is truly my most packed freebie yet so I’m SOOOOOOOOOOO excited for you all to grab it!!!!!!!

do you love dreamy, cinematic photography?
follow Hannah Kutner | Cinematic Photographer & Educator for more

“The children’s television host Mr. Rogers always carried in his wallet a quote from a social worker that said, “Frankly, there isn’t anyone you couldn’t learn to love once you’ve heard their story.” And the way I like to interpret that is probably the greatest story commandment, which is “Make me care” — please, emotionally, intellectually, aesthetically, just make me care. We all know what it’s like to not care. You’ve gone through hundreds of TV channels, just switching channel after channel, and then suddenly you actually stop on one. It’s already halfway over, but something’s caught you and you’re drawn in and you care. That’s not by chance, that’s by design.” - andrew stanton (writer and director of toy story, finding nemo, and more)

i’ve preached this before and i will again - i learn so much from studying cinematography. it’s what all of ky education is based in. so of course, learning from the greatest left my with a lot.

here’s my takeaway from this ted- talk from andrew:

our job as storytellers is to make people care: in three ways. if you can do this, you can immerse anyone in your work. when people see, they want to stay because they care. they want to stay because they’re now immersed in your world - they can see themselves in it.

that’s what i do with all my work. that’s the root of my cinematic approach and telling stories: i make people care - by showing real humans, and above all, real, genuine love stories.

i would love to hear anyone else’s interpretations of this! it’s so powerful and words that i think of on most days.

DID SOMEONE SAY FREE MASTERCLASS?! 🎥🍿✨

But first, let’s talk about the REAL reason your photos don’t look “cinematic” — and spoiler alert: it’s not your camera.

It’s that you’re treating photography like a collection of pretty shots, instead of what it really is…

✨ A SCENE FROM A STORY !!!

Cinematic images aren’t made by chance — they’re created through intentional coverage (wide, medium, close), consistent light motivation, emotional pacing, and framing that actually means something.

If you’re only shooting what looks good on Pinterest, checking off boxes on a shot list, and not thinking about how those shots connect together… of course the gallery is going to feel flat. Of course it doesn’t feel like a movie. Because a movie isn’t just a montage of pretty — it’s a rhythm. A visual arc. A story with a beginning, middle, and end.

AND YES THIS IS THE PART WHERE I SCREAM ABOUT IT: 📢📢📢

STOP TRYING TO PLAY IT SAFE, TO BE AESTHETIC, AND START THINKING LIKE A DIRECTOR!!!!!! GET CREATIVE!!!!!!!

In my free masterclass, I’m teaching the exact framework I use to turn every shoot (even a 1-hour session in a boring location) into something that feels intentional, emotionally rich, and YES — like a movie.

🎬 YOU’RE GONNA LEARN:

+ The #1 reason your galleries don’t feel cinematic (and how to fix it fast

 + My signature FIVE-PASS COVERAGE METHOD (this one’s a game-changer)

+ How to plan your shoots like a filmmaker (and edit like one too)

💥💥💥AND YESSSSS IT’S FREEEEEEEEEE 💥💥💥

If you want access to the masterclass, just comment CINEMA below and I’ll send you the link directly TO SAVE A SPOT !! And then prepare to enter your director era (of viral, stand-out work) !

P.S - I only do this ONCE a year, so save your seat!

CLICK LINK IN MY BIO TO APPLY!!! 🎞️

I am beyond honored to finally open the doors to The England Retreat — a six-day immersive photography experience set in the rolling hills of the Cotswolds, where every cobblestone lane and linen-draped shoot will feel like a novel come to life. We’ll be immersed in our own version of Pride and Prejudice and have all of our whimsiest cinema dreams brought to life.

This isn’t just another retreat.

It’s a love letter to slowness, to storytelling, to remembering why you started in the first place.

We’ll shoot five cinematic sessions that feel like movie scenes — from a Pride & Prejudice–inspired elopement to cozy mornings inside real English cottages — and I’ll be teaching you exactly how I shoot every frame like it’s part of a film.

There will be tea in the garden, fog on the windows, laughter around the dinner table, and conversations that stay with you forever.

This retreat is for the ones who are craving depth, beauty, and creative rebirth.

If you’ve felt stuck, uninspired, or ready for something more — this is it.

Only 12 spots.

why your photos don’t look cinematic ⬇️

We NEED to talk about FRAME WITHIN A FRAME — because it’s one of the most powerful cinematography tools to instantly make your photos feel like a scene instead of just a snapshot. ✨

In movies, frames are never neutral. Directors are constantly using architecture, windows, mirrors, car doors, and even negative space to create a frame inside the frame. Why? Because it draws your eye, adds depth, and makes you feel like you’re looking into a world that’s bigger than the shot itself.

THE NUMBER ONE MISTAKE I SEE:

👉 Shooting your subject floating in open space with nothing guiding the eye.

👉 Forgetting that the edges of your photo are opportunities — every line can add drama, intimacy, or tension.

Want to get started? Here are 4 frame-within-a-frame ideas you can steal straight from cinematography:

    •    Windows + doorways (classic isolation shot)
    •    Mirrors (double meaning + reflection)
    •    Car doors / windshields (instant intimacy)
    •    Natural elements like branches or foliage)

That’s how you turn a flat photo into a cinematic still.

Want WAYYYYY more goodies than I could ever fit in a single caption? Comment FRAME below, and I’ll send you my full framing guide that has an incredibly in-depth breakdown of framing, how it’s used in cinema, and shot ideas you can steal breakdown straight to your inbox 💌✨

Kari and Alden in Ireland 🎞️

There are some people who feel like proof of something bigger — humans that make you believe in fate, in string theory, in anything and everything divine — because it’s impossible to deny they were meant for one another. You just know they’d find their way back to each other in every single lifetime.

I first met them at a retreat I was educating at in Vermont and fell in love with their hearts instantly. They carry this magic you can never really put into words, it’s something you just feel in their presence.

One of my favorite parts of being a guest educator at retreats is getting to witness the beauty other hosts create. It fills me with so much inspiration to bring back into my own spaces. Having had the opportunity to see .co.photo work her magic has truly been life changing.

Hosting five retreats this past year left me more grateful than I can ever explain, and I had actually decided to pause hosting for a while so I could plan with full intention and lean into guest educating at them instead.

But then…I watched Pride & Prejudice one too many times, heard England calling my name, and knew I had to make an exception. 😉

Cat’s been out of the bag for a few weeks now.. but it’s officially going LIVE on MONDAY at 2PM EST!

If you want to hop on the waitlist for first dibs, comment England or Retreat 🧚✨🎞️ I’ll share more details over there! 🤎

Anyways, this week in Ireland was something more than magic and I am forever grateful for these 7 days spent drowning in all the green.

COLOR GRADING PSA!!!

A few years ago, I remember so many moments where I was nearly in tears, or wanting to rip my hair out.. sometimes both – all because my “go-to preset” wasn’t working on the photos I was editing.

I thought that in order to be consistent, I had to use the same few presets from a pack, and force them to work across every single shoot.

Anyways… BORRRRIINNNNGGGGGGG!!!

How do you think movies make you feel so much?

And color grading should be just as important in your work, too.

I used oranges and pinks to convey the warmth of the summer sun — love, ambition.

I used blues and purples to tap into nostalgia and excitement.

Engulfed in green and decorated with life — the gift of nature breathing into this love.

Kate and Scott felt like a reflection of it all — movement, growth, rootedness. A living testament to what it means to become something together. To be surrounded by life in all its forms — and to become part of it.

Their families were full of the kind of warmth that wraps you up and makes you feel like you’ve been invited in for years. They told stories that pull you closer — clearly raised in love.

Your wedding day isn’t a performance. It’s not meant to be a highlight reel. It’s a remembering, a returning, and this one was exactly that.

And once again, I find myself full of gratitude — for all of it.
But especially for the gift of being inspired by two such simple things: love, and the color green.

25 🧚🏼🌿✨Every year on my birthday, I head into the mountains to celebrate —

And every year, while I’m there, I write. I write about the beautiful moments I’ve lived in the past yet, and the not-so-beautiful ones too. The growth, the grief, the pockets of magic I stumbled into where I wasn’t expecting.

This past year was humbling, expansive, and grand in a way I never could have imagined.

I launched my course and got to teach over 200 incredibly talented photographers what storytelling means, to be the vessel — the mirror — of their innate talent. I hosted retreats across the country — built community, held space, witnessed love pour out around me. I got to experience all the most beautiful parts of humanity.

And in the midst of it all, I learned to believe in myself. I learned to be vulnerable and grounded. To stand taller, not just for me, but so I could lift others up, too.
If I am anything, I hope I am a light. This year felt like coming back home to myself.

I feel so lucky (more than lucky) to be a part of this wild and beautiful community. To see another year. To celebrate all of it — the good, the hard, the in-between — cheers! 🤎
