Prints and other items available at https://hiddenwilds.com - thanks for supporting my journey! I'm Debbie Campbell, an amateur wildlife / nature photographer and a professional web designer / developer based in Fort Collins, CO. Currently I use an X-H2S and Fujinon 150-600mm lens as my primary wildlife setup. I started primarily focusing on wildlife in the spring of 2023, so am still pretty new a

t it. I find wildlife photography incredibly rewarding; the thrill of the hunt is a big part of it. Never knowing what you're going to see any given outing, and having to be ready for any situation, are also very satisfying. Post-processing is an art that I also really enjoy - being able to chip away at the data until the image you want emerges.

Had a fun but very short close encounter with a Gambel's quail at Clark County Wetlands Park in Las Vegas. He landed on this nice fence post for just a few moments so I could take his picture.

This tricolored heron was photographed at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge during a wildlife photography workshop in Florida this March.

What started as a chance to photograph some of Florida's incredible bird life became much more than that - it was my first major photography trip after a back injury sidelined me in December, and it was also my first opportunity to really put my new OM-1 Mark II through its paces in the field.

Over five days we photographed everything from nesting wood storks and roseate spoonbills to green herons, least bitterns, and dozens of other species at locations across Florida's east coast.

I've just published a trip report featuring some of my favorite images, memorable wildlife encounters, and lessons learned along the way.

Watkins Glen has been a bucket list item for a few years. The beautiful, wispy little waterfalls and glacier-carved gorge looks just magical. This week I finally got the chance to experience it - and it was not what I expected at all.

We arrived in central NY last Saturday in the middle of day-long pouring rain. It rained again hard Sunday night and on Memorial Day (Monday) at 8am we arrived at the visitor center at Watkins Glen State Park. We were told the upper reaches above the gorge were closed due to flooding, and the water was 'really ripping' in the gorge that morning.

After climbing the North Rim stairs to get around the construction of the last bridge that's still ongoing, we dropped down into the gorge on a stone staircase. From that moment until we hiked up the stairs about a mile later, it was a wild muddy deluge like Niagara Falls being forced through a slot-canyon-like 200' gorge. It was so loud we had to yell at each other to be heard.

It was unlike anything we've experienced for sure. Fun but also kind of scary. I may plan to go back in the fall sometime when the leaves are changing and the flows are a lot lower...

Valley of Fire State Park, NV. This is Mouse's Tank Road, named for a Southern Paiute tribe member named Little Mouse who hid out in the area in the 1890s after being accused of murdering two prospectors. He survived by drinking water held in natural basins in the rocks - known as 'tanks' - before eventually being surrounded and killed by a posse a few miles from the tank named for him.

The road is short but is as spectacular as it looks.

Just found out I made it into one of the five juried fine art shows I applied to in Denver! So excited... But I'm glad it's in late August and not right away...
