We are deeply disheartened by the recent events surrounding the sudden closure of Canyon Concert Ballet. Our hearts go out to the students who have worked so hard this year, the teachers who have mentored them, and the professional dancers navigating this difficult transition.

Having grown up and danced in those studios ourselves, we can’t help but feel the weight of these circumstances. We wanted to offer what we can to support this community. After an overwhelming amount of requests, we have decided that we are moving forward with photo week independently and opening our doors at Fokel Studio for donation-based sessions. Our small business has been impacted by these very unfortunate circumstances as well, but we know the repercussions are felt most deeply by the dancers, teachers, and families. Whether you can contribute a little, a lot, or nothing at all, you are welcome here.

NO DANCER WILL BE TURNED AWAY.

Our goal is to ensure every student has the opportunity to commemorate their hard work and progress this year by participating in a session.

We also want to open these sessions to the professional dancers, to offer audition materials needed to keep moving forward. Albeit late in the season, we hope this can help you in some way or another.

Ok. Long emotional post buffering.

Wow. I’m a little speechless. It’s strange to think I’ve spent the last six years photographing all of you beautiful people, and I am so grateful. It has been incredible watching you light up when you feel like a photo represents you and your authentic self. These shoots have brought me so much joy over the years, and I feel privileged to get a peek into all of your experiences as humans.

Honestly, I’ve been putting off writing this because I get emotional thinking about it. For so many years, I have seen your beauty. I saw your breakthroughs. I saw you all recognizing the way I see you — as incredible humans. But still, I never stepped into that space for myself. I didn’t have the courage to step in front of the camera for me.

When I first started the business, Jacob and I would do some experimental photos of each other, but I had never put aside a day to get in front of the camera and do this. Just for me. Not for light testing or promotional purposes. Just in a studio, for me.
Even when I was dancing full time, I had never spent the money or taken the time. I found I really enjoyed being the one to hide behind the camera.

To be completely transparent, the past couple of years, I’ve been harder on myself. I’ve dealt with family traumas, battled negative mental health, and have been nursing multiple injuries — including two hip labral tears I’m still trying to recover from. All that to say, I don’t feel my best.

I say that not because I’m trying to be a martyr or tear myself down, but because I’ve discovered that you don’t have to feel your best to show up. Showing up when you don’t feel your best is an incredible thing — and today, I can recognize my beauty even without feeling 100%.

Maybe that’s why I’ve never done this. I’ve always been waiting for the “right” time, when I’m not injured, when I’m tan, when my flexibility is good, etc. But all that to say: it’s not necessary.

Now that spring is almost here and I have some down time before the busy season, I thought I’d share some photos from my gallery exhibition and collaboration with IMPACT Dance last Fall.
I had so much fun creating these ideas and working with the dancers on these concepts.

Throughout the project I was able to create photographs for a gallery that supported the “narrative”, albeit abstract, of the evening length performance. It was such a quirky and fun process creating these images hand-in-hand with the dancers. The themes explored were generally inspired by the eccentricities of our dreams.
