“For last year’s words belong to last year’s language, and next year’s words await another voice. And to make an end is to make a beginning.” - T.S. Eliot

As we scroll through the visual tapestry of the past, it’s important to remember that each picture represents a story of growth, resilience, and the hope for new beginnings. Here’s to framing our own narratives, embracing change, and finding inspiration in the present moment.

Heading into week one of finals, I’m drafting papers in my mind and reciting presentations in my sleep while simultaneously anticipating the final month of 2023 and reflecting on the beauty of this last year. Savoring memories made and inspiration found. The countdown and transition to a new year is so very bittersweet.

Stella and I embarked on a culinary adventure to make our favorite recipe, but fate had other plans for us. Despite our best efforts, we were missing a crucial ingredient - a zucchini. We quickly placed an order and headed to the store, eager to complete our mission. As always, Stella's expertise in the kitchen was a thing of beauty, and I watched in awe as she prepared our meal with love and care. However, our plans were derailed when we discovered the zucchini covered in mold. Scratch that onto plan B. As we indulged in dinner, we noticed the sky growing dark and clouds gathering on the horizon. Ry had just finished mowing the lawn, and Stella and I knew the impending rain would make the fresh scent of cut grass even sweeter. So we ran outside, she watched the sky, and I watched her, in awe. She is the beat of my heart; I am eternally grateful for the in-between moments where space in time is created for the two of us to be together.

As we venture out on our nature walks, we immerse ourselves in the wonders of the Autumn season. Bare feet meet cool grass while sunkissed skin greets the warmth of the sky, it's not yet cool enough to require a jacket. The apples may not be edible, but we still find joy in pretending to bake delicious treats; apple pies and apple crisps. The kids' imaginations savor the last of the day's light as they take on riveting roles as store owners, bakers, and customers. I adore these moments, watching them play and explore. Even Scarlett, who had to chase after her "horse" who ran away from the bakery, adds to the magic. Mama Stella carries Sterling on her hip. We create make-believe worlds, transforming pinecones into porcupines, crab apples into gumdrops and pea pods into treasures. But amidst all the fun, we make time to honor our loved ones in Heaven. Every year we make something special from our Fall finds, like butterflies or hummingbirds, each work of art crafted with colored leaves, wildflowers, and twigs. It's a heartfelt way to remember them and keep them close to our hearts. A tradition the kids love just as much as I do. As they grow older, I'm grateful that they still have a curious sense of wonder and an eager excitement for adventure. Find me here, alongside them, exploring, dreaming and creating with compassion and love.

As I reflect on this morning's speech delivered by the First Lady of Ukraine at the University where I’m studying, I was reminded of the sobering reality of the challenges faced by our global community. Despite the excitement of Stella and Scarlett as they shared their experiences decorating peace lanterns, which will illuminate their school at sunset to commemorate September 21st as the International Day of Peace, the First Lady recounted the harrowing experience of Ukrainian children on their first day of school a few weeks ago, as they were forced to evacuate to bomb shelters. Moreover, the loss of university students who went to fight at the frontlines and the consequent impact on their families and communities underscores the gravity of the situation.

However, amidst this turmoil, the First Lady spoke about how literature has sustained their community, with soldiers reading in trenches and families reading together in bomb shelters as a reminder of "normalcy." This serves as a poignant reminder of the transformative power of education, even in the most challenging of circumstances.

I wrote the kid’s teachers to commend them for their efforts in educating our children about the value of world peace. Our shared privilege of living in freedom makes it imperative that we continue to inspire future generations to strive toward a more equitable and peaceful world.

During my first week of school, I had four separate deployment requests, one of which was a three-week deployment to Hawaii. Despite the heartbreak of saying “no,” I felt the weight of the missed opportunity to alleviate human suffering and the missed opportunity to learn hands-on. Going into week five of school, I’ve studied trauma manifested through various crises over the last 30 years. It is surreal to study past disasters while at the same time simultaneously learning from current disasters, each more ferocious than the last, just four weeks in - Hawaii, Florida, Morocco, and Libya. There is so much destruction; the US alone is suffering 23 billion dollar disasters thus far in 2023. Taking a break from studies to document this sweet session, I reflected upon finding photography 14 years ago while serving in Africa. Using my camera to visually document life has been a profound tool in psychological first aid. Witnessing baby girls' joyful smiles and the love this family showed for one another was so sweet; this life is so sacred. , I adored meeting your beautiful family; my heart is full 🧡
