As early as I can remember, taking pictures was an almost daily part of my family’s life. There was much more to it, however, than just capturing baby’s first steps or creating a scrapbook of family events. My three brothers, a sister, and I were all home-schooled and ra
ised in the family’s business of agriculture, automotive, and construction research. As we grew, picture-taking recorded the projects we worked on, the training we received, and served as instructional reminders of how various undertakings were accomplished. A photographic library was created to chronicle our travels, training, business research procedures, and design and development, providing a lasting record of the Prince family’s history, education, and progress in all our fields of endeavor, which were numerous. As with everything we did, it was not enough to just take pictures; photography was a science and an art that each member of the family mastered to one degree or another. For me, it was the early video recorders that captured my undying interest. The first one we had back in the 80s was actually a cumbersome two-piece set that was best transported in a wheelbarrow, as it was almost as big as I was at the time. But it made a photographer of me, and I learned how it worked from the inside out. It was not long before the new all-in-one video cams came out, and over the years, I experimented with many of them and became adept with the highly professional features they offer. I studied and compared brands, kept abreast of the latest developments and capabilities of various models. As technology evolved from early video players to current digital recording tools, I grew up with it and continue to study the latest developments. While video recording gave us a new dimension in photographic chronicling, digital cameras also enabled us to see the results and get the information right away. The early quality of our first digital, a 1.5MP HP, could hardly compare with the good Nikon SLR we had been using and certainly did not replace it. However, the convenience, immediacy, and ability to share photos via emails made it a welcome addition to our tools. We upgraded to better cameras with higher megapixel counts and saw the quality of our pictures improve significantly over time. Having been in front of or behind a camera ever since I can remember has made photography a natural part of my life. We were raised to seek perfection in everything we do, because everything we do is done as unto the Lord, who directed all our steps as we were taught of Him. We had wonderful equipment and tools to work with, regardless of the activity we were engaged in, and we were always engaged in many diverse projects! Consequently, a significant amount of time was spent evaluating, understanding, and caring for all the equipment we used. Photographic equipment is no exception, and I continue to grow in both experience and knowledge while teaching many along the way.
