THE BELT — Episode 21: THE MAN WHO DISAPPEARED

A Fictional Story by Michael L. Nelson

Disclaimer: I really did meet Terence “Bud” Crawford, and we posed for a picture together. Everything that happens after that meeting is fiction.

“I never made that call.”

I stared at my phone.

No outgoing call to Bud.

No record of his number.

But in Omaha, Bud was certain he had heard my voice whisper:

“Help me wake up.”

Back inside my hotel room, I locked the door and placed the bag on the bed.

The belt’s golden glow had disappeared.

“Who was that man?”

Silence.

“What did he mean when he said I wasn’t awake?”

The belt did not answer.

I called the front desk.

“There was a man standing across from Room 718,” I said. “Dark suit. Black tie. He disappeared during the fire alarm.”

The clerk paused.

“Sir…there is no room across from 718.”

“I saw the door.”

“There has never been a door there.”

Two hotel-security officers arrived minutes later.

We reviewed the hallway camera footage.

The video showed me leaving my room.

It showed me standing in the hallway.

It showed me talking.

But I was talking to an empty wall.

The man in the dark suit did not appear anywhere on the recording.

“Play it again,” I demanded.

The guard replayed the footage.

There I was—arguing with no one.

Then the clock on the recording changed to 7:18.

The picture froze.

For exactly twenty-three seconds.

When the video resumed, the bag was no longer in my hand.

It was lying against the wall where the mysterious door had appeared.

One of the guards looked at me.

“How did the bag get over there?”

“I don’t know.”

Then the older security officer noticed the silver symbol burned into the wall.

His face went pale.

“You have seen this before,” I said.

He refused to answer.

I grabbed his arm.

“Tell me.”

He looked toward the other guard.

Then he spoke quietly.

“Twenty-three years ago, another guest reported seeing a man in a dark suit standing in this same hallway.”

“What happened to the guest?”

“He disappeared.”

“What was his name?”

The officer shook his head.

“The hotel removed it from the records.”

“Show me.”

We went downstairs to a locked storage room beneath the hotel.

Inside were old registration books, photographs and security reports.

The officer opened a dusty ledger from twenty-three years earlier.

Room 718.

One guest.

Check-in time: 7:18 p.m.

No checkout date.

Beside the entry was the same mysterious symbol.

The guest’s name had been covered with black ink.

But someone had written a number in the margin:

23.

Suddenly, the belt whispered from inside my bag.

“He was the first.”

“The first what?”

“The first to refuse.”

The storage-room lights went out.

When they returned, the security officer was gone.

His chair was still moving.

The door had never opened.

All that remained was his hotel identification badge.

I picked it up.

The photograph showed the same officer.

But the name underneath was impossible:

MICHAEL L. NELSON.

Back in Omaha, Bud received another photograph from the unknown number.

It was an old hotel-security image dated twenty-three years earlier.

The man in the dark suit stood in the hallway.

Beside him was a championship belt.

Bud enlarged the photograph.

The belt looked exactly like his.

But twenty-three years ago, Bud had not won it yet.

Another message appeared:

MICHAEL IS NOT THE FIRST.

Then a second message:

BUT HE MAY BE THE LAST.

In Colombia, the elevator doors opened behind me.

The missing security officer stood inside.

His eyes were closed.

He slowly lifted his head.

When he opened his eyes, they were glowing gold.

He spoke in the belt’s voice:

“Run, Michael. He knows you found the ledger.”

The elevator doors slammed shut.

I pressed the button.

Nothing happened.

Then I looked down at the hotel badge again.

The name had changed.

It no longer said Michael L. Nelson.

It said:

NUMBER TWENTY-THREE.

THE BELT — Episode 20: THE SECOND RULE
⭐ SPECIAL EDITION: THE BELT SPEAKS ⭐

A Fictional Story by Michael L. Nelson

Disclaimer: I really did meet Terence “Bud” Crawford, and we posed for a picture together. Everything that happens after that meeting is fiction.

The man in the dark suit stood across the hallway.

“Michael…we need to talk.”

I tightened my grip on the bag.

The championship belt was inside it.

“Who are you?”

He raised his hand, showing me the silver ring. The strange symbol carved into it appeared to move beneath the hallway lights.

“My name doesn’t matter,” he said. “What matters is that you broke the first rule.”

“What first rule?”

His smile disappeared.

“You listened to the belt.”

The hallway suddenly became silent.

No elevators.

No televisions.

No voices behind the hotel-room doors.

Not even traffic from the street below.

Just silence.

Then the belt spoke.

“Do not follow him.”

The man’s eyes shifted toward my bag.

He had heard it too.

“You see?” he whispered. “It has already chosen you.”

“Chosen me for what?”

He stepped closer.

“To finish what Number Twenty-Three started.”

My heart stopped.

Number Twenty-Three.

The same number from the notebook.

The same number of missed calls.

The number that had followed me from Omaha to Colombia.

“Who is Number Twenty-Three?”

The man looked over my shoulder.

“Someone who believed he could control the belt.”

“What happened to him?”

“He disappeared.”

A hotel-room door opened behind the man.

Inside was complete darkness.

He pointed toward it.

“If you want to survive, come with me.”

The belt became hot against my side.

Then it whispered the second rule:

“Never follow a man who knows your name…but refuses to tell you his.”

I stepped backward.

The man reached inside his jacket.

I turned and ran.

Behind me, he shouted:

“YOU’RE NOT AWAKE YET, MICHAEL!”

I stopped.

Not awake?

Before I could turn around, the hotel fire alarm exploded through the building.

Red lights flashed.

Doors opened.

People rushed into the hallway.

But the man in the dark suit was gone.

So was the dark hotel room.

There was only a solid wall where the door had been.

I stood frozen, surrounded by screaming guests.

Then something impossible happened.

Every clock in the hallway changed at the same time.

7:18.

The exact time Detective Harris had received the first tip that the belt had left the United States.

And now, for the first time, the belt will tell you something Michael could not hear.

I remember every man who has carried me.

The champions.

The thieves.

The protectors.

And Number Twenty-Three.

Michael believes he found me by accident.

He is wrong.

I have been waiting for him.

But there is something Michael does not know.

Something Bud does not know.

The man in the dark suit was not there to capture Michael.

He was there to wake him.

Back in Omaha, Bud sat alone watching the Colombian news report.

The photograph of his missing belt was still open on his phone.

He enlarged the image.

The belt rested on a hotel bed.

A digital clock stood beside it.

7:18.

Bud studied the photograph more closely.

In the mirror behind the belt, he saw Michael sleeping on the bed.

But Michael had been awake when the photograph was taken.

Bud zoomed in again.

Standing beside the sleeping Michael was the man in the dark suit.

Then Bud noticed something written across the mirror:

THE SECOND RULE HAS BEGUN.

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

Bud answered.

No one spoke.

Then, from thousands of miles away, he heard Michael whisper:

“Bud…help me wake up.”

The call ended.

In Colombia, I was still standing in the hotel hallway.

I had never made that call.

❓ QUESTION OF THE DAY: Was Michael really awake—and what did the belt mean when it said it had been waiting for him?

THE BELT — Episode 19: THE WARNING
A Fictional Story by Michael L. Nelson

Disclaimer: I really did meet Terence “Bud” Crawford, and we posed for a picture together. Everything that happens after that meeting is fiction.

“Michael...”

I froze.

For weeks, I had heard whispers. Words. Warnings. But never my name. Until now.

I stared down at the belt. The gold seemed brighter. Warmer. Almost as if it were breathing.

“Why me?”

Nothing.

I asked again. “WHY ME?”

The lights flickered. Once. Twice. Then darkness.

My phone was dead. The television was dead. Everything in the room had lost power—except the belt.

A faint golden light spread across the room.

Then the voice returned.

“They know the country.”

My heart started pounding. “Who? The police?”

Nothing.

“The man in the black SUV?”

The belt suddenly became hot against my body.

“Both.”

For the first time, I understood. The police weren't the only people searching for me. The mysterious organization was searching too—and whoever they were, they already knew I was in Colombia.

Then came another message:

“You must move.”

“Where?”

No answer.

“WHERE?”

Suddenly the electricity returned. My phone came alive.

23 missed calls.

Twenty-three. Again.

Before I could touch the screen, breaking news appeared on television:

NEW DEVELOPMENT IN CRAWFORD BELT INVESTIGATION

A reporter stood outside a Colombian hotel surrounded by police vehicles and investigators.

“Authorities believe they may have identified the hotel where the missing championship belt was recently located.”

I stared at the television.

They had the right country. They were getting closer.

But there was one problem.

It wasn't my hotel.

Someone had deliberately sent them to the wrong place.

Someone was either protecting me...

or setting a trap.

Back in Omaha, Bud watched the same report. He didn't celebrate. Something didn't feel right.

Then his phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

One photograph.

His missing championship belt.

The picture had been taken only minutes earlier.

Underneath were three words:

HE'S NOT THERE.

Bud stood up.

Another message appeared:

YOU'LL KNOW SOON.

Thousands of miles away, I grabbed my bag.

The belt whispered:

“Go.”

I opened my hotel-room door...

and stopped.

Across the hallway stood a man.

Dark suit. White shirt. Black tie.

On his finger was a silver ring engraved with the same mysterious symbol I had seen before.

He smiled.

“Michael...we need to talk.”

Episode 15 — The Greatest Victory

Disclaimer: I really did meet Terence Crawford. Everything that happens after that meeting is fiction.

The Crawford Training & Fitness gym was unusually quiet.

The students expected Coach Bud to be angry. They expected him to talk about the missing championship belt, the million-dollar reward, or the investigation.

Instead, he gathered everyone around the ring and smiled.

He looked at each young fighter and said,

"A championship belt is valuable... but your character is priceless."

The room fell silent.

"I've spent my life learning that every fight isn't won with your fists. Some are won with your heart."

He paused.

"I don't know who took my belt. Maybe one day I will. Maybe I won't."

"But I've already made a decision."

"I'm not going to let bitterness steal what the belt never gave me in the first place."

One of the youngest boxers raised his hand.

"Coach... aren't you mad?"

Bud smiled.

"Of course I'm disappointed."

"But disappointment doesn't have to become hate."

He walked to the center of the ring.

"When people hurt you, you have two choices. You can carry that hurt for years... or you can place it in God's hands and keep moving forward."

He pointed toward the heavy bags.

"Every one of you is going to lose something in life."

"A fight."

"A job."

"A friendship."

"Someone you love."

"You may even lose something you worked your whole life to earn."

"But never lose your faith."

He looked around the gym.

"Forgiveness isn't saying what happened was right."

"It's refusing to let what happened control your future."

The students nodded.

"My legacy isn't hanging on a wall."

"It's standing right here in front of me."

He pointed to the young men and women wearing boxing gloves.

"Every lesson you learn."

"Every person you help."

"Every act of kindness."

"Every time you choose integrity over revenge..."

"That's a championship no one can steal."

As everyone bowed their heads, Bud quietly prayed.

"Lord, I place every loss, every disappointment, and every unanswered question into Your hands. Help me forgive. Help me keep serving. Help me remember that no trophy is greater than Your purpose for my life."

The gym remained silent.

Not because of fear.

But because everyone understood they had just witnessed a different kind of champion.

Not one defined by gold.

One defined by grace.

Episode 8 — Phase Two

A Fictional Story by Michael L. Nelson

Disclaimer

I really did meet Terence Crawford, and we posed for a picture together. Everything that happens after that meeting is fiction.

The city never slept.

Neither did I.

Every television...

Every radio...

Every phone...

still carried the same story.

One million dollars.

For a belt.

A belt that was now...

part of me.

I stood at the bedroom window watching headlights drift past.

Every car slowed.

Every stranger looked suspicious.

Every knock...

made my heart race.

Maybe nobody knew.

Maybe everybody did.

I looked down.

The belt wasn't just attached anymore.

It felt...

comfortable.

Natural.

Like it had always belonged there.

Then the blue smoke appeared again.

Not much.

Just enough to remind me...

it was awake.

I remembered the whisper.

"This is only the beginning."

I finally admitted something to myself.

Going back...

was no longer an option.

Not yet.

The city was too hot.

The reward was too big.

Too many people were looking.

I needed time.

Time to think.

Time to understand what this thing was doing to me.

Time for the heat to cool down.

I grabbed an old duffel bag from the closet.

A few clothes.

My toothbrush.

Cash.

Nothing that would attract attention.

No destination.

Just away.

As I zipped the bag closed...

my phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

One text.

No picture.

No name.

Only six words.

"Leaving won't change what's coming next."

I froze.

Nobody...

should have known.

I slowly turned toward the dark hallway.

Someone...

was already inside the house.

To Be Continued...
