Looking back at September 5, which premiered at Venice on this day in 2024. Directed by Tim Fehlbaum and brought to life through the lens of cinematographer Markus Förderer, the gripping historical thriller captures the tension of a story unfolding in real time on live television.

September 5 went on to earn Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations, with Förderer’s cinematography helping shape every frame. Proud to have RED cameras behind the images of stories that stay with you long after the credits roll.

The Rattlin' Bog, directed by Maxwell Klaiber, will make its World Premiere at Not Film Fest in Italy on August 30. Set in a remote mountain cabin, the feature follows three friends whose getaway takes a dark turn as tensions and egos begin to unravel the group.

Shot by DP Andrés Aragón on RED V-RAPTOR X with additional footage on KOMODO-X, the feature was filmed almost entirely inside a tight cabin, shooting at 2000 ISO to make the most of practical lighting. Paired with vintage zoom lenses, the RED cameras gave the crew the flexibility to work quickly while maintaining the film's distinct visual style.

A fully tethered camera workflow can simplify the path from capture to post, eliminating media transfers, checksum verification, and the risk of a formatted mag bringing your day to an unexpected stop.

Dan Duran, Head of Post Production Workflow, joins Workflow Kitchen to discuss the benefits of tethered workflows and how they can streamline real-world production and post workflows.

with Skip Hobbie (Skip Hobbie)

For Bat City, a series of educational shorts created for audiences visiting Austin’s famous Congress Avenue Bridge, cinematographer Skip Hobbie set out to showcase the beauty and diversity of bats around the world. Working with Merlin Tuttle’s Bat Conservation, the team traveled to Costa Rica for a single intensive shoot, capturing as many species as possible in one location.

Filming bats comes with its own unique challenges. Fast-moving and most active after dark, they require patience, specialist knowledge, and high frame rates to reveal behavior that happens too quickly for the human eye. Skip used the RED V-RAPTOR shooting 8K at 120fps for wider sequences, paired with a Phantom VEO 4K for close-ups. The RED V-RAPTOR also captured interviews with renowned bat conservationist Merlin Tuttle in 8K, while the RED GEMINI became a low-light vérité camera for following biologists at work, often illuminated only by headlamps.

For Skip, natural history filmmaking is about giving audiences access to creatures they may never otherwise see. By revealing the beauty and behavior of bats in ways the human eye cannot, he hopes to create a deeper understanding of these often misunderstood animals and inspire people to care about their protection.
