And then the whole family went in. đ
This family came together from three different states to Folly Beach for a pretty wonderful reason: to celebrate an 80th birthday.
And the woman they were celebrating was one of those people you donât easily forget. She had such a warmth and kindness about her, and it was obvious how deeply she was loved. She and her husband have shared more than 50 years of marriage and a lifetime of adventures togetherâand now here they were, surrounded by the family they built.
What I loved most, though, was how much this family genuinely enjoyed one another. They laughed. They played. They hugged. Nobody seemed to be simply enduring the family-photo portion of the vacation. đ They were just really, really happy to be together.
At the end of my beach sessions, I often tell the little ones that, if their parents are game for wet clothes and sandy children, theyâre welcome to get in the ocean.
This time, the adults apparently decided that invitation applied to them, too.
Before I knew it, nearly the entire family was headed into the Atlanticâand I was standing in the water photographing them running straight toward me.
Iâve photographed a lot of families over the years, but this was a first.
And somehow it felt like the perfect ending to this particular evening: an 80th birthday, three states, several generations, more than 50 years of marriageâand a whole family willing to get soaking wet together just because it sounded like fun.
These are the sessions I drive home from feeling a little more hopeful about the world.
