And then the whole family went in. 🌊

This family came together from three different states to Folly Beach for a pretty wonderful reason: to celebrate an 80th birthday.

And the woman they were celebrating was one of those people you don’t easily forget. She had such a warmth and kindness about her, and it was obvious how deeply she was loved. She and her husband have shared more than 50 years of marriage and a lifetime of adventures together—and now here they were, surrounded by the family they built.

What I loved most, though, was how much this family genuinely enjoyed one another. They laughed. They played. They hugged. Nobody seemed to be simply enduring the family-photo portion of the vacation. 😂 They were just really, really happy to be together.

At the end of my beach sessions, I often tell the little ones that, if their parents are game for wet clothes and sandy children, they’re welcome to get in the ocean.

This time, the adults apparently decided that invitation applied to them, too.

Before I knew it, nearly the entire family was headed into the Atlantic—and I was standing in the water photographing them running straight toward me.

I’ve photographed a lot of families over the years, but this was a first.

And somehow it felt like the perfect ending to this particular evening: an 80th birthday, three states, several generations, more than 50 years of marriage—and a whole family willing to get soaking wet together just because it sounded like fun.

These are the sessions I drive home from feeling a little more hopeful about the world.

This little guy brought plenty of personality to his family’s Folly Beach session—and he won’t be the littlest one for much longer. 🤍

He was very happy to have the spotlight for a while—and with that smile, who could blame him?—but Mom and Dad also brought along ultrasound photos of the baby who will soon be joining them.

We photographed all three (and four!) of them just outside their Folly Beach rental, played at the water’s edge until their little one had had enough, and then let some very helpful friends take over baby duty for a few minutes.

That gave Mom and Dad a chance to wander down the beach on their own. And I’m so glad they did. Somewhere between walking, laughing and a completely impromptu spin by the sea, we made some of my favorite photographs of the evening.

I love a gallery that can hold what a family looks like right now—and leave a little room for who’s coming next. 🤍

There's something extra special about finding a little bit of home all the way down here on Folly.

I've had the joy of photographing these two twice now when their travels have brought them from Knoxville to the coast -- and this time I discovered that she's now coaching at my own high school alma mater. Such a small world!

And these two are just FUN. Bare feet, wet clothes, big laughs, and a very impressive dip -- and so much joy between them.

These are the moments I love most, when the posing gives way to play and everyone simply enjoys being together.

Some seasons are loud. Others ask us to slow down.

The moments that matter most are often the quiet ones—a child’s hand reaching for a sibling, sandy feet racing the tide, laughter carried away by the wind.

Those are the memories I hope you’ll still be able to feel years from now.

If you’ve been thinking about documenting your family while everyone is together this season, I’d love to help you preserve this chapter.

Come make a little magic at the edge of the sea. ✨

I love photographs that leave room to breathe.

Room for wind-tossed hair.
Room for sandy feet.
Room to lean into the people you love.
Room for the morning to unfold on its own.

Sometimes the best portrait isn’t about standing perfectly still.
It’s about remembering what it felt like to be there.

Folly Beach and Charleston have a way of slowing things down-in a good way-and they're meaningful places to spend time together.

If you're visiting this season and considering photos, it helps to plan ahead. Availability can fill quickly during busy weeks.

I've made booking simple online. You can view sessions and request a date, and I'll follow up personally to help with timing and location (sunrise on Folly and early mornings in Charleston tend to be the most relaxed).

If you'd like to get something on the calendar before your trip (I'm local to Folly!):

I photograph on Folly Beach and in Charleston and am happy to answer any questions. You can also view my work on my website:

I walk this stretch near Truluck Island almost every day—and I still miss it sometimes.

It’s easy to get used to something this beautiful—to pass it without really seeing it.

Last night I stopped and framed it, just with my phone. Same view, different pace.

It felt quieter that way. More intentional.

Sometimes that’s all it takes.

Ben asked, Ashley said yes—and it all unfolded aboard the catamaran Prevailing Winds with Charleston Sailing Adventures on a windy afternoon in Charleston Harbor, with the Ravenel Bridge just beyond.

It was such a thoughtful, beautifully planned moment, and a joy to photograph.

I photograph proposals throughout Charleston—on Folly Beach, downtown, and on the water. Working in changing natural light and real conditions like this is something I’m very comfortable with, and it allows me to stay focused on what matters most: recognizing the moment as it’s happening and preserving it as it is truly felt.

Thank you to Captain Brian for welcoming me aboard, and to Ben and Ashley for trusting me with such an important moment.

If you were planning a proposal in Charleston, would you choose the beach, the city, or the water?
