Sunday night we got called out near Fairhope to find a hunter's deer. We never found his, but the thermal picked up a different one: a velvet eight-point laid out in the brush. No holes, no blood, and he had just died.

That doesn't happen often. So we went back the next day and took the head to the CWD sample collection station to get it tested. Anything that helps keep an eye on the health of our local herd is worth doing.

Side note: after filming all that and filling out the tag in my best 5-year-old handwriting, we found out there are instructions posted right on top of the freezer. Did not read them. Not even a little bit. 😂😂

Three years flying recoveries and that's a first for us.

One deer survey tells you what the property is holding right now: total deer, bucks, does, fawns where we can get them, and the buck-to-doe ratio.

Fly it again next year, same time of year, same way, and you can see what changed. Whether the ratio moved. Whether the place is holding more deer or fewer. That's what landowners use it for, herd and land management.

We fly midday under overcast, when deer are bedded and holding still, so they can actually be counted.
