This Christmas card was originally done in 1952 and taken in Paris with Milton H. Greene in front of the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel. It was a collaborative effort between Joe Eula and Milton. Done before the days of Photoshop, the ornaments were hand drawn by Joe directly on the print and Milton removed the top of the Arc then he rephotographed it. Originally black & white, we modernized it a bit by adding color.

Happy 80th Birthday to Lauren Hutton! Born on November 17, 1943.

Photographed by Milton H. Greene in 1966 for Life Magazine's 30th Anniversary Issue.

Lauren was photographed on a black background. Later Milton photographed a lit burlap scrim. He took both transparencies to the Life lab where they made two master negatives. The negatives are lined up with registration pins over the paper and in order to make each print, they would expose each negative at a different time intending to get a variety of choices of what is essentially, a sandwich image. They made 12 dye transfer prints, a process that is not only complicated and expensive, but the chemicals were highly toxic. The next step is to pour the colored dyes one at a time over the print while using a roller to bring out the appropriate hues and saturation. After five hours in the darkroom, two prints were perfect.

In honor of Veterans Day, Marilyn Monroe recalls the time she changed her Honeymoon plans with Joe DiMaggio to visit troops in Korea. Excerpted from Monroe's autobiography, "My Story."

"Japan turned out to be another country I never saw. An Army officer came up to our seat in the airplane as we were approaching Japan. He was General Christenberry. After introducing himself, he asked, "How would you like to entertain the soldiers in Korea?"

"I'd like to," my husband answered, "but I don't think I'll have time this trip."

"I wasn't asking you," the General said. "My inquiry was directed at your wife."

"She can do anything she wants," said Joe. "It's her honeymoon."

He grinned at me and added, "Go ahead."

Joe stayed in Tokyo, and I went to Korea. My first stop was in a hospital full of wounded soldiers."
