The Gold Mountain Fire, which started near Ouray, Colorado a few days ago is raging across the Uncomphagre Mountains. This intense fire is being driven by extreme drought and high winds--as a result of human caused climate change.

The first, black and white, picture in this series shows Courthouse Mountain and Chimney Peak which are located on the western side of the Uncomphagre Wilderness Area near Ridgeway. According the current maps showing the boundaries of the fire, this area has been totally burned by the fire. This is one of the most iconic mountain scenes in western Colorado. Now altered for the remainder of our lives.

The next picture is on the opposite (east) side of Courthouse Mountain and Chimney Peak looking into the West Fork of the Cimmaron River. At this point in time the fire has not dropped into this amazing subalpine valley, though it has burned around the base of Courthouse Mountain. I'm sure there are many fire fighters and resources working to prevent the fire from dropping into this valley. The fire is burning into the forested areas in the distance beyond Chimney Peak.

The third picture looks into the upper reaches of the West Fork of the Cimmaron River. Courthouse Mountain is just out of view on the left side of the picture. The West Fork is an incredibley gorgeous high mountain valley. I hope that it is as amazing the next time I hike there!

The upper reaches above Cow Creek is shown in the fourth image. The area directly behind this picture has burned according the burn maps.

Fire in these high subalpine environments is very damaging. Entire old growth forests are completely burned. It may take centuries to recover. Or even longer given that global climate has been altered to the point that forest reestablishment may not be possible.

Every day as of late I mourn the loss of one of my favorite local wildness areas, Red Rock Secret Canyon Wilderness, to the Pocket Fire burning between Sedona and Flagstaff.

What will this place look like once this fire is done? Will there ever be another autumn with glorious big tooth maple trees coloring the canyon bottoms? Will any of the huge old growth Ponderosa pine trees survive? Can the previously untouched beauty of this place return within my remaining years on this planet, or will it take many centuries to recover?

These photographs are of the Secret Canyon and Long Canyon portion of the wilderness.

Over the next months and years I intend on returning to each of these places to document how they have changed due to the fire, and to watch how they begin to recover.

While this might look like a sunset picture, it's not. Smoke from the Pocket Fire in Red Rock Secret Canyon Wilderness near Sedona has changed the entire color palette of light around Flagstaff to an orangish-yellow tint.

There is a serene majesty when icebergs tower several hundred feet above the calm ocean surface.

This image was taken below the Antarctic Circle at the southern most point of my Antarctic adventure. These icebergs and the continuous sea ice beyond them prevented us from sailing closer to the bottom of the world.

What do you see in her smile?

While walking the around the Barkor in Lhasa, Tibet, this elderly Buddhist woman and I locked eyes. Like many traditional Tibetan Buddhists that I have meet, she was quick to share a smile.

I was immediately drawn to this young Tibetan girl and her mother when I visited the highest Buddhist monastery in the world on the north side of Chomolungma (Mt Everest) nearly nearly two decades ago.

When I asked to photograph them, the girl snuggled with her mother as I took a couple pictures. I was particularly struck by her intense and brilliant eyes gazing straight into me.

My daughter, who was only a bit older than this girl, instantly became her playmate sharing a bit of time playing with a stuffed animal.

I wonder what this girl, who is now in her twenties, has experienced in here life since the day we met. I would love to go back to this monastery again and see if I can learn her life story since that day.

I almost missed this little aspen sapling on my hike along the San Francisco Peaks. Something made me turn back, and I'm so glad I did. The way the snowflakes nestled in its branches was quietly mesmerizing.

This image, which I am calling "Gentle Touch of Winter" is all about those small wonders we often overlook.

What details about winter have caught your eye lately? ❄️🌿
