It feels like everything is arriving slow this summer. The heat, the rain, the wild flowers, and the hummingbirds. Will we have a longer summer, or will it start to cool off soon? @ Flagstaff, Arizona

I've been asked a few times lately what my photography style is, and I don't think I have the answer to that yet. I'm finding that I prefer realism over fantasy or hyperreal, but when I shoot human subjects, they tender to be posed photos. I try to photograph things as they occur. Opportunities for nature photos are pretty abundant in northern Arizona, and the food scene here is getting pretty good too, but I guess these are the easy photos.

I had the incredible honor to photograph this beautiful couple in Sedona. On the day we did the shoot, it was cloudy, gusting, and breezy. The weather didn't exactly cooperate, but we got some beautiful photos! Here are some of the photos from that day.

I've just finished typing a guide for visiting Japan. A good friend of mine is visiting Tokyo for three nights, and I'm absolutely jealous. I've recently changed departments at my full time employment, so I need to figure out when I can take time off to go home to see my family. Maybe it'll be in the fall again. Here are some common questions people ask me.

When is a good time to visit Japan? You should visit Japan every season. Spring is beautiful with cherry blossoms. Summer is fun with festivals, monsoon rain, firework displays, and insects. Fall is beautiful with changing and falling leaves. You can ski/snowboard in the winter, and new years is an excellent time to visit temples and shrines for the first wishes.

How long should I visit Japan? At least a week, or maybe even two weeks. You can visit a few different cities if you stay for two weeks.

Where in Japan should I visit? Visit Kyoto, Osaka, Kanazawa, Tokyo, Hokkaido, Okinawa, and some of the inland prefectures like Nagano and Tochigi.

Thanks for following along as I shared my photos from Japan.

In one of the last posts wrapping up my photos from visiting Japan last year, I want to highlight (if I haven't already) what a great country Japan is to visit. I'm a little biased, I know. There are, lots of interesting historic and cultural places to visit such as Tokyo Skytree (1st photo), Kyoto, Osaka, Kanazawa, and Sawara (2nd); tasty beer like Ebisu (3rd); and delicious food like takoyaki (4th) and katsu curry (5th).

Sawara is a former city (now merged with other cities to form Katori) in Chiba Prefecture. Sawara became a port town during the Nara period, and eventually the regional commerce center. They used the nearby Tonegawa (river) to transport goods to towns nearby and as far as Edo which we call Tokyo today. If you find the area of Katori, Chiba in Google Map, you'll find Tonegawa that they used until they got to the area of Abiko where they began traveling by land. Many of the original buildings are still standing despite the frequent earthquakes.

Have you been to Japan? What was your favorite part?

I've been busy working and haven't had much time to take photos for fun. As you might know, this IG account is where I post my semi-professional "for fun" photos, and also some photos from shoots of personal clients. Have a look at these photos of a male Backchinned hummingbird I captured while at work in Tuba City last week.

I previously posted about transportation, but it's worth sharing with you about the bullet train. The Shinkansen connects the major cities of Japan, and some travel at 160 mph. Purchasing each ticket separately would be expensive, but foreign travelers to Japan can use the JR pass to pay for the boarding ticket, and the seat reservation is only a fraction more. Flying can be cheaper but can take longer especially because of traveling to the airport and checking in, for short distances such as between Tokyo and Kyoto. They are looking to begin the Maglev route in some parts of Japan by 2027 which will shorten travel time even more.
1st photo: Tokyo Sky Tree.
2: A test platform maglev train that is now on display at the JR Maglev Museum near Mount Fuji.
3: A maglev traveling at 500 km/h!
