When Andrew and I got married, we were college students at BYU (this month marks ten years since we left Mormonism!) and, when we got engaged, I thought: “This is it. I need to start baking bread.” So I did!
I had no mixer but I did have a bowl and a spoon and hands so I found a recipe online - amish white bread on allrecipes - made my first few batches before we got married and, by the time we got married, was so into baking bread that I cried with happiness when I got my first bread machine. To say I was thrilled was an understatement.
Joke’s on that 22 year old though because, now that I’m almost 40, I never use a bread machine anytime I bake any kind of bread - it’s just me, my very old bread loaf pans, and an old lady nose (remember, I am almost 40) that says “smells right!” as I go about the process. And I wish I could say that was because of magic but really it’s because I baked bread every single week for so long that, if I fret over a recipe, I’ll do a worse job than if I turn my brain off and just vibe.
Annnnd honestly I can’t remember the last time I baked bread (these bedazzled + floral loaves are 100% from Walmart) unless you count the orange rolls I made a few months ago. But every time I think about making it? I think of that really sweet, slightly feisty, very in love 22 year old version of myself: covered in flour and so excited for the very traditional life she had planed.
She wouldn’t be very proud of me if she met me today but I could not be more proud of her! 💖
