Louisbourg Nova Scotia,

I'm working on a first time photographer's quick guide to Nova Scotia based on my experience planning the same trip a little over a year ago. In the process I've been reviewing some of my shots and does it ever make me long for a return trip to Nova Scotia! With all that Nova Scotia has to over I'm honestly surprised that it doesn't get more notice in the photography community in general as a destination spot. Between the rocky coastlines, picturesque fishing villages, lighthouses, the hills and mountains of Cape Breton Highlands, colonial forts, all within a few hours drive it's really a smorgasbord for photographers!

This was taken from Louisberg Lighthouse on a stormy and windy fall morning as the remnants of a hurricane provide some nice waves!

San Francisco

One last west coast photo share before another fall season is upon us and my posts are filled with fall colors! I've got a busy schedule lined up for this year ranging from Rickets Glenn(PA), Blackwater Falls (WV), Dolly Sods (WV), and on to my staple of Western NC and the Smokies. Fall is my absolute favorite time of year!

This shot stands for itself. Lovely clear night overlooking San Francisco - a beauty isn't it!

Yosemite National Park

Reflections can be a very powerful element to use in a photograph and one I particularly like. Whether it be a tidal pool by the ocean reflecting a sunset, a shallowed out piece of rock at a waterfall, or the glassy surface of a slow moving river they all tend to pull my eye. This early morning at Yosemite was no different. Yosemite can be a real madhouse but in the early morning there is some solitude to be had. This morning, my last morning at Yosemite, I grabbed my little slice of it. I gazed over the Merced river at Yosemite Falls, listened to some Cold Play, worked hard to stay in the moment, and caught myself some morning reflections. Well at least until the photo workshop van pulled up to my little piece of heaven and unloaded about 15 eager photographers who quickly trampled onto the bridge as the instructor started shouting out composition suggestions, filter suggestions, and the like. It's ok though - I learned to share a long time ago and it's the short lived things that you end up appreciating the most :)

Filter: B&W Circular Polarizer
Processing: Some small contrast and white balance adjustments and dust removal in Lightroom, Sharpening with Nik Sharpener Pro, and slightly cropped.

Pinckney Island, SC

I'm more of an opportunist wildlife photographer. I don't typically go out with the goal but if something interesting along the way pops it's head up I'm happy to grab a shot. I had headed out to Pinckney Island for a change of pace. I had scouted a spot on my previous trip for a sunset but it would require me to bring along a bike so I could make it out in time before the gates locked up automatically for the night. On my way down to my spot I stopped off at a fresh water pond and was simply amazed by the birds getting ready to roost for the night. Hundreds and hundreds of Ibis, mixed in with Adult Tricolored Herons (thanks Cindi Brown Jarrell for identifying the bird for me!), and lots of misc small birds. The noise level made my ears buzz. The backdrop of the green moss, green trees, and golden light before sunset made me forget all about my sunset spot. I ran around shooting these guys until I ran out of time.

Exposure: F 4.5, 1/640 at ISO 500
Processing: Contrast Adjustments, slight cropping, and dust spot removal in Lightroom. Sharpening in Nik Sharpener Pro. Used the Content Aware brush in Photoshop to remove a small but annoying leaf on the edge that got it's way into the shot that kept pulling my eye and had to go :)

Bodie Island Lighthouse, Outer Banks North Carolina

The Outer Banks of NC have so much to offer for landscape photographers from great beaches to lighthouses and piers. I just had a great trip there last week, prime tourist time, but it's also a great place to visit off season when you can avoid the crowds and all those pesky folks getting in your shots :) From a landscape perspective very little changes from season to season (unless you're shooting wildlife of course) so it's really the best of both worlds (minus the restaurant selection lol - everything is closed!). Last January I visited with a friend of mine on our way back from Virginia and we decided to stop off at Bodie Lighthouse for the sunset. I had a brand new (well newly replaced) 10 Stop B&W Filter so of course a long exposure was planned. We thought it was going to be a fizzle but as every photographer can attest to some of the best light is after sunset and we weren't disappointed. You may have notices I have a real affinity for Lighthouses and long exposures.

Hint of Half Dome - Tunnel View Yosemite National Park

A more traditional and iconic view from Yosemite National Park a couple months back. As is typical at the tunnel view the crowds started up early and the photographers lined up. I don't think any compositions from the Tunnel View can be called "different" but I think this is probably less popular then the full view of the Valley. I liked how Half Dome was just peaking out in the distance with pink clouds of sunset and Bridalveil Falls played a more prominent role in the foreground (if you can call a couple miles away foreground haha) As much as this vantage point is photographed so frequently and I've seen it a million times in other photographs I think I could sit there in that parking lot every night for my remaining days and likely smile each time :)

Golden Gate Bridge After Dark, San Francisco CA

As promised a Golden Gate Bridge shot. The quintessential fog made its appearance the previous evening but didn't show itself for the rest of my time during the trip. What it did allow for was crystal clear skies showing downtown San Francisco so no complaints :)

The Other Bridge, San Francisco CA

The Golden Gate Bridge get's most of the attention but it's not the only bridge in town! Oakland Bay Bridge rightfully deserves some attention as well. Shot from Rincon Park right down from the Ferry Building I was glad to easily find the remnants of this pier I've seen in many shots that served as a nice foreground for this long, over 6 minute, exposure. Not to worry though I have some shots of that other more popular bridge as well :)

Moon Over Yosemite, Yosemite National Park

Yosemite has no shortage of breathtaking views and clear skies aren't always a bad thing! Around every turn a majestic overlook from Tunnel View to Glacier Point and Sentinel Dome and that's all just within a few short miles. Arguably many spots are over-photographed as well but it's truly a photographer's play land.You could almost close your eyes, click the shutter, and you just may walk away with a shot you're happy with (ok maybe I exaggerate a little lol).

Instead of posting a shot that many of you have likely seen a million times (don't worry I have some of those to share as well haha) I thought I would start with something a bit different. The sky was very clear this evening - no epic fog or clouds to work with but what we did have was a gorgeous rising full moon!

Moons can be very tricky to shoot but if you catch them early enough in the evening when there isn't much contrast yet between the moon and the sky you can often get what you need with a single exposure.

Capers Island - South Carolina

Busy week packing and getting stuff done before my trip next week to the west coast. If you grew tired of my Nova Scotia lighthouses you may grow tired of the little bridge in San Francisco and the small rock face in Yosemite after next week :)

I only get about a trip a year out to the west coast so I look forward to it each and every time. As much as I love what the east coast has to offer the scale of things out west is truly something to behold. I think if my roots and family weren't so entrenched here I'd be tempted to move west!

Saying that there are some absolutely golden locations and gems over here as well. This is from Capers Island South Carolina near Charleston SC. My good buddy Alistair Nicole and I over stuffed our kayaks and headed out to the island for a fun couple days of shooting. We had the island to ourselves and we ended up cutting it short a bit early due to pesky thunderstorms and bothersome tornadoes (tornadoes and kayaks aren't a good mix haha) but we still had an awesome time and got a few good shots. I have to give full credit to Alistair for finding this gnarly old piece of drift wood on the boneyard beach scattered with it's remains but it made a great focal point for the shot. I missed a trip this year but I hope to head back again soon!

Mt Rainier National Park - Sunset from Sunrise!

This was my first trip to Mt. Rainier a few years back so as is often the case with first trips anywhere I had miscalculated a good bit of the travel times not only around the park itself but getting to the park as well. Drive time from Seattle International Airport put me at about 2 1/2 hours including some padding but unfortunately I hit this spot FIVE hours after leaving Seattle and still a couple miles from my goal of Sunrise Visitor Center. Gotta love Seattle traffic :(

My original plan was to get there a couple hours before sunset and scout a bit for a quick & easy first day sunset. As is often the case I had about 5 minutes to pick a composition, unpack, and shoot after seeing the color form. I almost wasn't going to bother and just kick back and watch but I flew across the country to shoot so damn it I was going to shoot!

I wasn't too hopeful while shooting. As the end of the week came I had used some down time (translated late at night and half asleep with exhaustion) to import, tag, and rate and evidently on my first pass while tagging and organizing this shot I didn't think to highly of it so this pretty much sat unnoticed for the last couple years until I came across it over the weekend. In hindsight I know that this was my only colorful sky I'd have the entire trip so I'm glad I took the moment to shoot.

Hilton Head, SC

Hilton Head is one of my homes away from homes. I've been visiting Hilton Head Island for over 20 years. This was a cold evening a couple months back with a strong wind pushing on me. I saw the sky forming and had a good feeling I knew what was coming. I smiled to myself as I saw folks head home from the beach and look a bit strangely at me. Not surprising as I was past my ankles in freezing cold water looking upon an unremarkable sky. Most photographers know that some of the best fireworks happen after sunset. I wasn't disappointed! Probably one of the best sunsets I've seen in years.
