Every time I have a new idea, I call Emily.

It's kind of become our thing. I'll message her and say 'Hey, want to try something?' and before I even finish the sentence, she's already asking what time to show up.

So when I wanted to test out Tip Top Tulips, I brought Emily and her two dogs. Red and yellow blooms stretching out in every direction, more colors just starting to push up through the soil. The light was doing exactly what I needed it to do.

Her dogs are the most patient, reliable test subjects I've ever worked with. Calm, hilarious, not especially interested in eating the landscaping. (Critical quality for this particular location.)

That afternoon wasn't just a test shoot. It was a reminder of why I love this work. A field, two dogs, my best creative instincts, and a friend who just shows up.

That's the part that never makes it into the final gallery, but it's always part of the process.

Finding a tulip field that allows dogs is one thing.

Finding one that also welcomes photographers is a whole different search.

I spent real time looking. Most places that allow dogs don't want cameras beyond a personal phone. Most places that welcome photographers have policies that draw a hard line at animals. Finding a location that says yes to both - genuinely, warmly, without making you feel like a logistical problem - is rarer than most people would guess.

Tip Top Tulips said yes. And not in a reluctant 'I guess we can make an exception' kind of way. In a 'we love what photographers do and want to support it' kind of way.

That kind of welcome matters. It changes the whole energy of a session when the place you're working in is rooting for you.

I'm so grateful I found it and for the kindness of the owner.

They close on May 10th this year. The tulips are slowly blooming and they have so many different colors! I'm so excited to go back and see them!

Sweet Pea took her egg-hunting duties very seriously—nose to the ground, tail wagging like a little spring metronome, and absolutely convinced every egg was placed just for her. (She found them all… especially the treats, which I accidentally left open for refills.)

There’s something so special about these simple, joy-filled moments—the kind that feel light, playful, and a little bit magical. The kind you wish you could bottle up forever.

Wishing you a beautiful Easter filled with laughter, and the kind of love that makes your heart do zoomies 💛🐾

I'd also LOVE to hear about what you all did with your dogs for Easter! Comment below letting me know!

Okay, so... I couldn't help myself. It's after all. And who doesn't want to see more of puppy Sweet Pea?? A lot of these were taken in April of 2020 when I first got her.

Before the camera, before the divorce, before the move, before the career shift, there was this light that came into my life that gave me meaning and purpose. Sweet Pea is the best thing that's ever happened to me. The amount of love I have for this dog that I never thought was possible, she has helped me in so many ways, but that's a story for another time.

For now, enjoy puppy Sweet Pea! ♥️

She has absolutely changed my life and my career path. I wouldn't be here without her! I love her so much, she means the world to me. She's why I do what I do.

Hello… it’s been awhile. 👋🐾

I’ve been busy working on some behind-the-scenes improvements, but I’m finally getting back in the swing of posting again.

So let’s start with this beautiful girl, Sophie — my niece!

My brother and sister-in-law adopted her back in August, and somehow I only met her a few weeks ago. Honestly? A crime.

Sophie gets nervous when new people come over and will bark to let you know she’s unsure. So I had to beg my brother to let me meet her… and of course I brought my camera just in case she warmed up.

We met in the garage first.
Lots of barking.

I ignored it and let her do her thing.

Inside the house she gave me the full suspicious sniff inspection. I said her name, stayed calm, and let her be curious.

Then my brother and I took her for a walk…
and every so often she’d turn around like,

“You still back there, lady?” 👀

When we got back, she approached me again. I could tell from her body language she wanted attention, so I slowly pet her chest (never over the head with a nervous pup).

And then…

It happened.

Sophie came up to me for pets.
Then a few minutes later…

BELLY RUBS.

Friends, we had officially crossed the trust bridge. 🐶✨

We even played with a toy after that.

I’m so happy Sophie and I are friends now. And it meant a lot that I could model calm interactions with her so others feel more confident around her too.

Huge thanks to for teaching me so much about reading and respecting nervous dogs, because she has one herself. Those lessons really helped this moment happen!

Sometimes the best friendships just take a little patience…

…and letting the dog lead the paw-ty. 🐾

Storytime:

When I started dating my partner in August of 2024 and he met my dog, all he wanted was to be Sweet Pea's 'dad'. I kept telling him no, not until we moved in together.

We moved in together right before Thanksgiving and I started to come up with a plan to have Sweet Pea 'ask' him to be her dad. I wanted it to be special. Since it was so close to Christmas, I came up with a plan.

I found .design.co who helped me put this all together and made us a custom bandana for me to take a photo of Sweet Pea wearing. Sami was so incredibly patient, kind, and helpful. She was so easy to work with on the design, went out to find fabric for this, and the bandana is a thicker, sturdier material that even survived Sweet Pea rolling in who knows what. AND! Sami even made me a new bandana because it was getting close to Christmas and it kept getting bounced around for days. I HIGHLY recommend Canine Design Co for anyone looking for a custom bandana!

My partner said yes to being Sweet Pea's new dad. I'm so happy with how everything turned out.

Thank you Sami for helping to make this such a special moment for all of us!
