That’s what we’re told.
Build the career. Have your own identity. Be present for every moment. Don’t miss a thing.

But don’t let someone else raise your children. Don’t you want to be with them? Children need their mothers.

And don’t rely on your husband for financial security. What if something happens? You need your own safety net.

Delegate more, they say. Make life easier. But a housekeeper? That feels excessive, doesn’t it?

Motherhood is beautiful - unfathomably so. And it’s also relentless. Exhausting. Heavy.

We’re told to hold all of it at once. To do it well. To do it gratefully.

Can we have it all? Maybe.
But not without cost. There is always a tradeoff. There is always a price.

When I first met Ashley she was in a hot pink sweater. She led me - a tired mom of two young children - cheerfully and gently through her pre-k classroom, and I felt the weight of sending my first child off to school for the first time ease off my shoulders.

I really wanted to post these in two separate posts so that each individual photo could be savored more - but I thought that all together they made each other more beautiful.
