The Aurora Borealis.

An S4 (Severe) Solar Radiation Storm brought the Northern Lights to rare latitudes. This view was only faintly visible to the naked eye due to light pollution in the DC region, but could be seen in magnificent vibrance with the right camera and processing, with a sky of stars and satellites as a vast backdrop.

Hello Eclipse fans! I have some captures for you from on the Mall in Washington, DC!

It’s only fitting that someone approached me to mention an AP photographer had also been capturing the eclipse using the exact same makeshift contraption in the same spot just minutes before I arrived (more on this later) - my inspiration for the 2024 Eclipse, since totality wasn’t in the cards this time, was some Washington, DC photojournalism.

I spent this eclipse beside the shadow of the Washington Monument, watching the moon creep over the sun, and the sun creep across the sky (warranting several position changes even during the height of magnitude. I had a specific idea in mind to capture, and I sadly didn’t capture what I hoped for - that’s the perfectionist at my core, because I still captured some great coverage of today’s , including the clearest and highest resolution images of the sun I’ve ever captured to-date (check out the sun spots!).

Friends, I made it to totality seven years ago, but won’t be this time around.

I’ll still be capturing photos of today’s solar eclipse, but with Spring weather bringing cloud cover to much of the totality path, my targeted or nearest-guaranteed-clear locations simply aren’t feasible this time.

With that, although I’m very disappointed, I’ll be shifting my plans for today’s , and trying to capture something locally iconic; be sure to follow J. David Buerk - Photography / to stay updated when I share my results down the line.

Today I’m sharing highlights of my 2017 Total Solar Eclipse from the totality line, including this totally remastered version of my hero capture of Totality. This updated version using the latest software and available techniques brings out more detail in the Sun’s undulating corona, and offers even greater sharpness than I was able to achieve in 2017.
