Let's talk about hair and makeup, you know the thing that should be fun and spicy but can also be overwhelming.....

I don't include professional hair and makeup in my bo***ir experience because I think women need to be "perfect". Quite the opposite. I include it because the woman who walks into my studio deserves to be taken care of. UM.... PAMPERED!!!!

You deserve to sit down. You deserve to have someone else worry about the details for a little while. You deserve to look in the mirror and see yourself looking like a baddie!

Makeup doesn't make you confident, it simply puts you in bad b*tch mode.
That's why hair and makeup are part of the House of Shewmaker experience.
We are setting the stage with all the bad b*tch energy.

I don't want your before and after.

I know. Weird thing for a photographer to say.
But I've been thinking about this a lot.

Women are constantly encouraged to document themselves as a "before."

Before the weight loss.
Before the divorce.
Before the glow-up.
Before the new job.
Before the surgery.
Before the transformation.

And then we celebrate the "after."

But what about the woman who was there for all of it?
The woman who kept going.
The woman who made the decisions.
The woman who changed her life.
The woman who didn't wake up one morning magically transformed, but slowly became someone she was proud of.

I don't want to photograph you as evidence of who you used to be.
I want to photograph you as evidence of who you are.

Right now.

Because someday, you're going to look back at this version of yourself and realize she deserved to be celebrated too.

That's the woman I want in my studio.
Not a project.
Not a before picture.

A badass woman with a story.

I don't think women realize how much of their life they're waiting through.

I was thinking about this recently.
Women are always waiting for something.

We're waiting until the kids are older.
Until the house is paid off.
Until work settles down.
Until we lose the weight.
Until we're less busy.
Until we have more money.
Until we're more confident.
Until we're in a better place.
Until we're out of a relationship.
Until we're in one.
Until we have a reason.

And I understand it.
I've done it too.

But the older I get, the more uncomfortable I am with the idea that we're supposed to spend our lives waiting for the "right" version of ourselves to finally enjoy being here.

Because what if this is the version worth celebrating?

What if the woman who is exhausted but still showing up deserves to be celebrated?
What if the woman rebuilding deserves to be celebrated?
What if the woman who finally has a little space to breathe deserves to be celebrated?
What if you don't need to accomplish one more damn thing?

That's part of why I love what I do.
I get to meet women in these weird, beautiful, messy chapters of their lives.
And I don't get to change them.
That's not my job.
They've already done the work.
I get to hold up the mirror.

And sometimes watching someone see herself for the first time in a long time is enough to make the whole room go quiet.
That's the part I never get tired of.

I want to talk about buying art.

I don't mean photography. I mean art.

Because nobody buys an original painting because they desperately need one.
Nobody looks around their house and thinks, "Well, s**t. We're down to our last painting. Better fix this immediately."

You buy art because something about it grabs you. Because you can't stop looking at it. Because it reminds you of something. Because it makes you feel something. Because you walk past it every day and still notice it.

Because eventually you realize, I want to live with this.

That's how I think about the portraits I create.
I don't want to hand you a folder of 47 pretty pictures and send you on your way.
I want to create something you actually want to live with.

Something you see when you walk into your bedroom. Something you catch out of the corner of your eye when you're walking down the hallway. Something that makes you stop for half a second and think, "F*CK me, I love that." And maybe, eventually, your daughter asks who that woman is. And you get to say: "That's me."

Not because the photograph proves you're beautiful. You already knew that. Because it proves you were there. You took up the space. You celebrated yourself. You made something beautiful out of a chapter of your life.

That's why I care so much about the artwork. The photograph is the beginning. The piece you live with is the part that stays.
