Captivated by Cormorants

(Double-crested Cormorants; the crests appear more visibly in the spring during the nesting season, where I've seen them high in the trees just above this site, Eugene, Oregon).

This day, Oct. 5, 2026, there were two pairs on the opposite bank from me, swimming away together at one point, with one pair returning to this spot. I spent a little over half an hour being with them, from a distance, and photographing them. One of the second pair remained in the water, while the mate stood near the first pair.

Best viewed on large screen, but if not, zoom in to appreciate the brilliant teal colored eyes!

A few fungi: The first two are neighbors and of the same species.

In the third, I loved the interplay and intertwining among different kingdoms of organisms: the mushroom is hastening the log's decay which then enriches the surrounding soil; the green plants grow from the soil and up through the mushroom, where the mushroom continues to grow around the stems and leaves of the plants; the fallen burnt orange leaves provide additional nourishment for the soil and for the mushroom as well.

Our own nourishment and lives depend on the health of the soil, especially the presence of fungi below and above ground.

Star-crossed lovers, or two sweethearts intertwined?

I photographed this series in the later afternoon as the light continued to change, and from different angles. I initially was drawn to this pair because they were apart from the larger clumps and the focus could be just on two.

I loved the way the shadow of the flowers mimicked the shape of the grooves on the lower right side of the rock. I also liked how the orange leaves and colors in the rock corresponded to the color of the anthers.

Colchicum x agrippinum, family Colchicaceae, not a crocus (family Iridaceae) as I discovered after further research.

Unity with Nature: a crab spider, a Matilija poppy, and I.

A bee stopped by for only a few seconds, escaping the advancing spider and too quickly for me to capture the encounter.

These were with my longer macro lens (135mm), which is sharp but doesn't focus as closely as my 105mm, so I needed to crop to see the spider in more detail. Just as well that I couldn't get too close with the camera, so the spider stayed somewhat out in the open.

Some ducks, Canada Geese, and a couple of pigeons from last week - at a park in Eugene, Oregon, USA. The birds are free to come and go - not caged. Unfortunately people feed them, despite the signs indicating not to do so.

Douglas Irises and a small (~1.5" or 4cm diameter) wild rose.
May 19, 2026, Hendricks Park, Eugene, OR USA.

The irises were in the native plant garden area of the park. I thought that they were Douglas Iris, but wasn't sure if I remembered correctly. While I was there, I searched online on my phone. When I clicked on one of the entries/results, what came up was my own Facebook post with a photo from 2024 that indeed identified them as such! It made me wonder if any other people have come across my posts by doing a general online search for certain flowers.
