What are you doing to be the light in darkness?
This is something I’ve been asking myself everyday.
Here are some of my resolutions:
✨Smiling at people & saying hello when walking past them
✨Spreading kindness & being extra nice, especially to those in service industries
✨Finding ways to give back to my community through volunteering with organizations promoting good
✨Picking up trash at parks or on walks/hikes
✨Cultivating a community that is welcoming of various views, yet shares a common belief in human decency
✨Teaching my children to accept others based on good character & actions, NOT the way they look
✨Staying off of social as much as possible - the over sensationalized echo chamber is meant to keep us overwhelmed & too paralyzed to do anything
✨Limiting news consumption & only reading center focused, credible sources like and - donating to help keep these unbiased sources available is more important than ever too
✨Shopping small, supporting local & purchasing secondhand before buying new - swearing off Amazon may be slightly less convenient but it’s not that hard to find alternatives locally, or considering if you truly really need it
✨Reading books! Either to learn or just to zone out
✨Doing a lot of yoga & meditating & crying - sometimes all at once! This speaks to some privilege but maintaining mental health makes it easier to help others
✨Offering whatever possible to organizations providing support to minorities & underprivileged groups
✨Prioritizing in-person connections, there’s a lot of power in togetherness!
✨Creating art 🖼️ be it in my work or just crafting with my kids. Because even in dark times, there’s still so much beauty in this world
Many of these I’ve been doing for years and still doesn’t feel like enough. But as my therapist likes to remind me, it’s what’s within my capacity and pay grade.
If you’re struggling to find the light these days, I hope these may spark some ideas for you.
But even if it’s not within your abilities to offer much, being kind has a ripple effect and is VERY IMPORTANT!!
