The Milky Way over Sin City 🌃

When I got to the top of Dante’s View, I was very pleased because it was significantly cooler (60 degrees!), but disappointed because of this weird, intense glow that was still hanging around the Milky Way core. From up this high, I noticed it was a lot more isolated than I originally thought. I suspected (and Google confirmed) that this light isn’t sunrise, it’s freakin’ Las Vegas, about 100 miles away! ⚠️ Insert my soapbox rant on the negative impact of light pollution here ⚠️

After my eyes adjusted, I realized the Milky Way arch was perfectly positioned right over the Vegas lights. Quite lucky, considering the Milky Way moves positions throughout the year, making this a pretty rare alignment. So instead of fighting against it, I decided to work with it. I ended up with this 7 panel panorama, with 5 stacked images in each panel, 35 images total.

An odd yet beautiful meeting of humanity and the cosmos💫

It’s time to share the main event: the Milky Way core rising over the desert mountains ✨

This is a 45 image stack of 15 second exposures combined into one photo to reduce noise. Since it is early in the Milky Way season, the core rises more or less horizontally along the horizon, so I spent the 3-5 AM hours fighting the soft pre-dawn glow on the mountains. MVP goes to my camp chair that I brought last minute, so I just set up my interval timer, kicked back, and sipped my coffee while my camera did all the work.

Between sunrise, sunset, and astro, my sleep schedule is royally screwed. But is this one of the best photos I’ve ever taken? Humbly speaking, I think so. The exhaustion is so worth it.

Artist’s Palette was a masterpiece 🎨

The colors are from volcanic deposits rich in compounds like iron oxides and chlorite, which creates a rainbow effect. The saturated colors become even more prominent at sunrise and sunset.

🌼 Flowers in the Desert 🌼

On a drive back to the hotel from an early morning shoot, I ran off the road, jumped out of my car, and took this beautiful shot of Desert Gold underneath the mountains.

🏜️ Zabriskie Sunrise ☀️

|| This was the second location I shot at Zabriskie Point. I initially showed up in the dark, and went straight to my first viewpoint. Because it was pitch black when I got there, I didn’t exactly look around. I saw this once I stood up and turned around to leave! Whoops! Pro tip: scout locations in the daytime so you don’t miss anything ||

This is a big “I told ya so” to everyone who gave me a weird look when I said I wanted to go to Death Valley. This place is incredible.

☀️ Sunrise at Zabriskie ☀️

Zabriskie Point is a part of the Amargosa Range located east of Death Valley in Death Valley National Park in California, United States, noted for its erosional landscape. It is composed of sediments from Furnace Creek Lake, which dried up 5 million years ago—long before Death Valley came into existence.

What is this silly set up you might be wondering? 📸 ✨

It’s a star tracker! Used in ⭐️ astrophotography ⭐️ , it’s essentially a small rotation machine you attach to your camera. Once calibrated to the North Star and your latitude, it will slowly rotate your camera at the same exact speed in which the earth is rotating. Why would you want to do this? So you can take long exposures and not get any streaky stars, of course! The longer the exposure, the more light you let in; which means more detail and color, and less post-processing and photo stacking.

I will be putting this sucker to the ultimate test during my trip to Death Valley in March, which has one of the darkest skies in the contiguous United States. See the final photos from my trip and find more of my work at beckyboucherphotography.com 📸
