Youβre out on a trail and you come across a bear. Depending on your personality, this scenario may sound like a trip highlight or a cause for trepidation.
Either way, knowing a few simple safety tips, call these the βbear βnecessities, can help you safely navigate areas in North Carolina where bears call home.
- They are beautiful but they arenβt teddy bears: Respecting that bears are wild animals is your first step.
- Keep your distance: If your presence causes the bear to change its behavior (stop eating, look up, etc.), you are too close.
- Move slow and steady: Remain facing the bear and back away slowly rather than taking off running.
- Be intimidating: If a black bear approaches you, stand your ground and make yourself as loud and large in appearance as you can. If you have bear spray, use it if a bear gets within 20 feet of you.
Learn more about bears, and celebrate these beautiful animals, during the 12th Annual National Black Bear Festival going on today and tomorrow (June 5-6, 2026) in Plymouth, North Carolina.
