Anole and Behold! 🦎

Sometimes the smallest things make you stop and look twice. This little Carolina anole was tucked perfectly among the leaves, keeping one eye on the world and doing his best not to be noticed.

Green anoles are native to the Southeast, excellent climbers, and can shift from green to brown depending on temperature, stress and other conditions.

Another small moment from the outdoors — easy to miss, but worth noticing.

I don’t typically reshare old posts on my photography page, but there are a few I’ll gladly make an exception for.

This video was captured exactly a year ago, in September 2025, at daybreak on the Albemarle Sound at Mackeys. It was one of those experiences you simply never forget.

I hope you enjoy revisiting this moment with me. I titled it “Ethereal.”

Corncealed 🌽

A little Bearolina peek-a-boo from the corn. 👀

This young black bear found a pretty sweet setup — plenty of cover and plenty to snack on. He almost had the hiding part down, but that curious little nose gave him away.

Apparently, stealth mode doesn’t account for a nose that cute. 🐻🖤

Post Haste

A flash of red, a weathered fence post, a little wind and drizzle — and one very sharplooking visitor.

The Red-headed Woodpecker is one of those birds that demands a second look. With its brilliant crimson head, snow-white belly, and bold black-and-white wings, there’s simply no mistaking it.

A little dreary weather didn’t seem to bother this one. In fact, I’d say it picked the perfect post for a portrait.

A Little Ahead of Himself

Red wolf pups do a lot of growing during their first summer — and sometimes it looks like the head gets there first. 😂 That wonderfully awkward, all-ears-and-head stage doesn’t last long before the rest of the pup catches up.

And if you look way down the road, there’s a black bear quietly going about its day. Two very different North Carolina natives, sharing the same wild landscape for a moment.

One of those summer scenes you don’t forget.

The Art of Getting Away

For the past three days, I’ve had the unique opportunity to observe the film crew from Eye Candy Digital Video at work, capturing footage for an upcoming tourism television show that will introduce viewers to Bearolina — Washington County, NC — and some of the people, places, and experiences that make this area special.

While the cameras were rolling, I had mine in hand too. Somewhere between the filming, the paddling, and the long stretches of open water, I caught this moment — the paddler making his way toward the cypress beneath a wide Carolina sky.

Sometimes the best photographs happen while you’re there for something else.

And sometimes, getting away really is an art.

Pinkalicious 🌸🦋

Joe-Pye w**d is a late-summer favorite in the Carolina landscape. Its clusters of dusty-pink flowers are rich in nectar, attracting butterflies, bees, and other pollinators when many summer blooms are beginning to fade.

Native Joe-Pye w**d species are an important part of eastern North America’s natural plant communities — and when those big pink flower heads are buzzing with visitors, it’s easy to see why.
