MACH22 REUNION CONCERT ~~

After a five year break, Philly's MACH22 returned to the stage for a rare reunion show to celebrate the ten-year anniversary of their first album, "Sweet Talk Intervention."

Here's a quick recap of the five core members:

Lamont Caldwell is the originator of the band and continues to be its leader and heart & soul. Among other career highlights, Lamont was a member of The Roots and toured internationally in Jay Z's band. As lead singer and songwriter, he brings a unique combination of soul and hard rock to his vocals. His on-stage charisma is something to experience!

Damian MonteCarlo is the long-time drummer for the band with his own unique hard-driving beat. By day, Damian represents a major drum manufacturer and by night, he is one of the most sought after Philly Rock drummers. His primary musical gig is with his own band MonteCarlo The Band. Known affectionately as "The Ambassador," Damian has an encyclopedic knowledge of all things rock. And he is a great friend to me and anyone else in his orbit.

Jaron Gulino is the guy we always knew would be in demand in the music world. I've known Jaron since he was very young and have photographed him and his bands since 2007. He has an extremely high energy level fueled by cases of Mountain Dew and a desire to be everywhere. He has toured with many well-known bands, even internationally. He was thrilled to join the touring band of his teenage idol George Lynch of Dokken. He was in the air to Detroit Saturday morning at the crack of dawn to sit in on the tour of another band. Always hustling.

Sebastian LaBar comes with a well documented pedigree learning to shred at the knee of his Dad, the late Jeff LaBar of Cinderella. Baz is currently living in Nashville and has toured with a number of well-known national acts. He holds down the lead guitar slot with MACH and his other bands. Another terrific human with a huge fan base.

Ric Haas joined MACH22 as a seventeen year old Wunderkind. His first gig with the band was when MACH was chosen as the opening act for Guns n Roses at Lincoln Financial Center. Nothing like starting at the top! At sixteen, he even played on a side for Twisted Sister! Ric has performed in Nashville and back here in Philly. A beloved shredder and nice guy.

Joe Smith is the man behind the scenes. The field general who acts as guitar tech, occasional sound tech, band security and all around great guy who makes things run smoothly. He is in huge demand throughout the Tri-State region. Without Smitty .... Well, we don't want to find out.

Brent Porche of WMMR promoted MACH's new single during the week and came out to introduce the band to the packed house.

ELEVEN YEARS OF MACH22 ~~

I've known bass player Jaron Gulino since he was a child. I photographed his earlier bands as he was coming up. MACH22 was a big break for him. I finally got MY big break as a music photographer in 2002 when I lucked into having access to Willie Nelson backstage with a disposable camera. After working my way up with other performers like BB King and Doctor John, I asked Jaron if I could shoot their local gig in West Chester on November 29, 2013.

Over the last eleven years, MACH22 and I have carved a visual path through an amazing journey in the Philly region. They are an incredible group of extremely talented rock musicians with disparate backgrounds and musical paths. More on that tomorrow.

These are three favorite images since that first shoot. The first is our first gig together at the former "Note" in West Chester PA on November 20 2013. That's Baltimore's guitar Wunderkind Ted Merrill with the hair and gorgeous green PRS.

The second image is from March 31, 2017 when MACH was the sole opener for Bon Jovi at a packed Wells Fargo Center. They slayed that show. The new Wunderkind shredder in the band was Ric Haas whose first gig was with MACH at 17 years old when they opened for Guns N Roses at Lincoln Financial Center on July 14, 2016. Nice first gig!

In the time since, members moved on to other groups, some on international tours. Two to Nashville.

Last night, they reunited for a ten year anniversary of their big album "Sweet Talk Intervention." Unfortunately, Ted was in Detroit with his band and couldn't make it. But it was a blast to get everyone else back on stage to a packed Philly house.

And the fans! I saw so many folks I've known all these years. It was like a class reunion.

MACH22 SOUNDCHECK - FOR THE FANS ~~

When the doors open at clubs and arenas, fans begin their evening hoping for a great show.

But long before they arrive, the best bands arrive at the venue hours before the show. They load in their equipment, the crew begins running cables, tuning guitars and drums, checking lights, and once set up, begin the long process of balancing the sound from each individual instrument and microphone. It's a process.

For me, it's a great chance to experience the buzz of the club. Bartenders are slicing limes, the venue staff are setting up, my old pal Smitty is in serious set-up mode and opening acts arrive for their own soundchecks after the headliner. As for my job, I chat with the lighting tech to (hopefully) convince him to give me great light and color and go to work tuning up my own cameras and lenses.

It's actually very serious business. A few laughs, but each player has an allotted time to set up and check their own instruments and mics.

Then it's time to visit, wait a couple more hours, maybe jump over to McDonalds or a taco joint for a carry-out. Green rooms are no longer drugs and debauchery. In most cases, they are a bit on the quiet and sedate side.

But then it's Showtime.

MACH22 REHEARSAL - FOR THE FANS ~~

Tomorrow night marks exactly eleven years since my first gig shooting Philly's MACH22. Since that night in West Chester, I have been behind the lens for most of their gigs throughout the region. From the small clubs to Wells Fargo Center and Lincoln Financial Field. And oftentimes, I share the backstage world with my pal Smitty, who is the regions most requested guitar and sound tech.

MACH has had personnel changes before and throughout my time with the band. But THIS is the lineup that saw their biggest fame throughout the area. Tomorrow night is their reunion gig: MACH22 at Kung Fu Necktie

While it's always fun to shoot the excitement of the live performance in a packed house, my personal favorite parts of music photography is to be a fly-on-the-wall at rehearsals, load-in, sound check, green room and load-out. It is at those times I feel I am giving the band's fans a peak behind the scenes.

MACH22 FINAL REHEARSAL ~~

The boys are back together for one huge gig this Friday. This is the lineup that opened for Guns N Roses, Bon Jovi, Brett Michael and so many others. From clubs to arenas, MACH generated a huge regional fan base.

It's been about five years since these five have been together as a band. Since then, and Sebastian LaBar have been on constant national tours with bands like Ta***ic, Saliva, Heavens Edge and Lynch Mob. Guitarist Ric Haas has worked the Nashville circuit, Damian MonteCarlo has joined forces with regional favorites to form his own band "MonteCarlo" and Lamont Caldwell has worked to keep the MACH22 brand together with some great regional players.

We hope to see all our old pals down at Kung Fu Necktie Friday night. There are tickets still available. Come on down and relive all those great nights.

Always a pleasure to hang out on Hole 6 to shoot foursomes for my very favorite charity.

It’s already been about fifteen years since I was board president for Safe Harbor. A lot has been accomplished by their staff and board since then. SH is the largest homeless shelter in Chester County and a model for others.

LYNCH MOB ~~~

A final recap of the Lynch Mob show Friday night. Of all the musical genres I have photographed, I have the most fun with Hard Rock / Metal performances. The music and energy is always exhilarating.

Each member of this four-piece band brings their own distinct personalities and showmanship to the stage, giving the audience a couple hours of thrills.

Personal note: Fans of this style of music are dedicated beyond any other. They wear the gear and dig into the details. I'm always humbled when even I am recognized at some shows. Yep. They even follow the shooters. It's a real family.
