AAIC Visual Perceptions - It's been a busy summer and fall season but we managed to stop by Savage Mill near Laurel this past week for some aerial photos!

The history of this grand mill is extensive and followers are encouraged to Google it to learn more. One notable use of the mill was for Christmas Ornaments! After the mill's closure, Harry Heim purchased it for $450,000 and transformed it into Santa Novelties, a manufacturer of Christmas ornaments. In December 1948, he launched a Christmas Display Village called "Santa Heim" (Santa's Home), which included live reindeer, a one-ring circus, and a miniature train that transported visitors from a parking lot on U.S. Route 1 to the mill. Additionally, a turreted castle was constructed at the intersection of Route One and Gorman Road.

AAIC Visual Perceptions - The midday coal train rumbles past the classic lines of the Baldwin designed B&O Passenger Station in Sykesville.

Once the location of a grist and saw mill, this area along the Patapsco River was called "Horse Train Stop" as no town actually existed when the B&O's rails arrived here in 1831. Since a reliable steam locomotive did not exist at the time, the B&O chose to use horses to pull its carriages up and down the valley. Even today one can still find the old granite sleepers and spring enclosures (used to water the horses) up and down the "Old Main Line".

It wasn't until Phineas Davis and Israel Gartner developed their first "Grasshopper" type locomotive, the No. 2 "Atlantic," at the Mt. Clare shops in 1832 that steam ran regularly up and down the Patapsco Valley between Baltimore and Frederick.

AAIC Visual Perceptions - We were recently tasked with shooting photos for the Gary Memorial United Methodist Church located in Daniels.

This fabulous granite beauty was built and donated in 1879 by then mill owners James A. Gary and family. Named for James' father, James S. Gary, it is the last of 4 churches standing that served the residents (depending on the era) of Elysville, Alberton, and Daniels. The ruins of the other three can still be seen today when hiking along Alberton Road.

AAIC Visual Perceptions - Yesterday was pizza day at my brother's, so we dropped into Point of Rocks to try our luck at catching a train. Within 5 minutes we were rewarded!

June has been a crazy busy month for our company and there hasn't been time to grab "fun" photos, but we do have some shots coming of one of Md's finest mansions! Stay tuned!
