RIP Yoshihiro Nishimura

I’m saddened to hear of the passing of legendary filmmaker and FX artist Yoshihiro Nishimura—known for films like Tokyo Gore Police, Helldriver, and Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl. I met him and Eihi Shiina on the red carpet at the 2011 Texas Frightmare Weekend. In the Variety post about his passing, it mentioned that Nishimura taught film classes and art workshops around Tokyo in recent years, and even hosted gallery showings for his students’ work. As someone who works in education, I know what those connections with his students meant, and I’m sure they will all be impacted by his passing. My thoughts are with his family, his students, and his partners in the film community.

If you are looking to watch this weekend. I can recommend Maggie Gyllenhaal 'The Bride' for something a little different. I was able to catch it on the big screen last night, and while I can see why The Bride might not be for everyone, that's okay. Maggie Gyllenhaal made the movie she wanted, told the story she wanted to tell, and that is all part of the greatness that is 'The Bride.' It is a love story born out of loneliness and acceptance with interesting characters, wonderful costumes, and a beautiful score.

R.I.P. Jennifer Runyon

Sad to hear of the passing of Jennifer Runyon. Many know her as the student Peter Venkman tries to feel out her ESP skills in ‘Ghostbusters.’ With my access to cable television in my youth, I also knew her from ‘To All a Goodnight,’ ‘Up the Creek,’ and, of course, ‘Charles in Charge’—honestly, she was the reason most of us watched that show. I got to briefly meet her at Texas Frightmare Weekend 15 years ago, and she was just as delightful as you hope she would be. 65 was too young for her, as it is for many. My thoughts are with her family, children, and anyone blessed to have known her.

Oh, and… F**k cancer!
