Taken a few years ago during the return of smokey summer skies, I sold a print of this at a recent showcase and was reminded just how beautiful Pratt’s castle can look during the summer with the ever reaching parthenocissus vines.
I can’t help but to think a hobbit is in there whipping up seed cakes, berry pies and delicous scones just after his second dinner? My imagination has gotten the best of me again. But indeed what a sight it is to see Pratt’s looks this way in all of its summer vegeta’s glory.

“Conk-la-ree-conk-la-ree!” is that familiar metallic melody that we hear from the notorious adult male Red-winged black bird which culminates in a distinct trill used to warn off rivals and attracts mates.
During the spring breeding season, males spend up to a quarter of their day defending their turf. These fierce birds are notoriously bold with their territorial defense and will dive-bomb animals much larger than themselves, including hawks, crows, and humans who get too close to their nesting sites even. Like you I can recall experiencing the sweeping dives on foot and bike when I’ve been too close and even several yards after leaving the immediate area, they mean business !

They are omnivores and during the summer breeding season, they eat mostly crop-destroying insects like beetles, caterpillars, and dragonflies and during the winter months they transition heavily to seeds and grains.

Just like their distinctive song their striking red shoulder patches bordered by yellow are called epaulets. Males use these patches to establish social hierarchies and dominance. They can actively puff them out during territorial displays or tuck them away under their black feathers to avoid conflicts.
