This last Sunday I headed back out to Palo Duro Canyon State Park in the Texas Panhandle. I took the Kiowa Trail from the Mack Dick Pavilion. I thought you could access the Bird Blind from there. Is the Bird Blind near the Trading Post? I continued on and connected to the Upper Comanche Trail making it a small loop.

Last Saturday I ventured out to Palo Duro Canyon State Park in the Texas Panhandle. I hiked the Capitol Peak Trail and did a little side adventure. The thunder clouds came in pretty quick as soon as the sun went down except they went around the canyon.

This past Sunday I went to Buffalo Lake in the Texas Panhandle, the fires were stronger on Saturday when I passed by the lake. I wanted to see on Sunday if any fire activity would be visible from the lake, well it’s not quite a lake anymore. I went south of Canyon and turned on Buffalo Lake Road to get to the lake, on my way I saw these three together and had to snap a few shots of them.

This past Saturday I headed out to Lake Meredith. I noticed this road down in the Spring Canyon area. It’s the first road to the right, I parked on the side of the main road and took the dirt road. I wanted to get up on the cliffs and walk down to the edge on the opposite side but you guessed it, I ran into a private property sign. 😕 I started walking back and decided to hike up the cliff on my left to get a view of the Spring Canyon area from above. It’s such a beautiful area that goes up to the north side of Borger, too bad we can’t get in there.

This Sunday out at Palo Duro Canyon State Park. I didn’t know if it would keep raining or if it would clear up so I drove down to the canyon floor for a restroom break and then decided on hiking the CCC Trail from the overlook. I stopped by the cabins and snapped a few shots of the green trees. As I was driving back up to the CCC Overlook the clouds started breaking up.

If you’re going to be packing at the very least practice firearm safety. I’ve been out to the Canadian River in the Texas Panhandle on numerous occasions already, on foot. I’ve made every effort to not take the main roads and stay out of the way. This past Saturday I went to the Canadian River, being careful but never in a million years imagining that I would have shots fired in my direction. Every time I’ve been out there I hear folks firing their weapons, I understand they like to go wild but again practice firearm safety. I hiked about three miles east from Highway 87, staying south of the river on the road closest to the river. I climbed up the bluff and stayed on the edge to see which vantage point I liked more. I hiked out to the end of the cliff and turned around and stopped on the road overlooking the Canadian River. There were several can-am’s that passed by and I made sure to stand up so they could see me, I laid down on the floor again after they all passed by and then I heard two more can-am’s, I honestly didn’t think much about it and figured they would keep going. To be honest I don’t know if they saw me. The two can-am’s park on a hill about 20 yards from me, there was a bush blocking their view of me but again I didn’t know if they had seen me already. Shortly after I heard shots fired as I have on numerous occasions, this time though they were literally about 10 feet away. Three shots fired and I scrambled down the side of the cliff to take cover just in case. As a veteran that’s all I could think about, get low and take cover. I got up and howled like a coyote to make my presence known, then I chunked two rocks in their direction again to make my presence know, finally I got up bare foot and walked to the other side of the road to make my presence visible again, I know someone saw me so I walked back to the spot I was at and laid down again. About two minutes later three more shots in the same direction as before, onto the road. I always seem to think about the worst case scenario and thinking how easily a bullet could have ricocheted off a rock and hit me. After scrambling again onto the side of the hill, I get back to my spot and get my shoes on. At that point I hear laughter and I gather my things and walk towards the two can-am’s and go right past them, they were a group of about eight people. As much as I wanted to cause a scene, I didn’t. As I walked by I continued to hear laughter, no remorse, no apology, no freaking integrity. I also heard someone comment, “he got to the ground.” Drinking and smoking impair your mind, then add narco corridors to the mix and you start acting like idiots. Two of the individuals look like they belong to a can-am club with their matching pink and black shirts. My biggest concern is whether they intentionally shot at my direction knowing I was there simply to get some laughs or if they were obstructed from seeing me, either way I had made my presence known way before they shot the second time. If so, that was a coward move on your part and I wholeheartedly believe karma will play itself out. If they do belong to a can-am club, represent better than that.

Last Sunday I returned to Blue Creek at Lake Meredith in the Texas Panhandle. Last time I was out there I made it to the Humble Falls, this time I hiked about another mile past the falls. Not too much to see out that way. I turned back and took a break right before reaching the falls.

This last Saturday I returned to the Canadian River right outside of Amarillo, Texas. Every time I’ve been I’m always tempted to keep going further and further. This is the farthest I’ve been so far, I was able to find a way up the cliff way out in the distance. The hardest part of this hike is surviving the swarm of flies and gnats on top of the hills but those views of the river are my motivation.

Howdy folks, last Sunday I found myself back on the Harbor Bay Trailhead at the end of Meredith Way at Lake Meredith in the Texas Panhandle. Last time I was here I took a right on the Fritch Fortress Trail. This time I went left on Harbor Bay Trail and followed it all the way to a side trail that took me to an overlook of the Harbor Bay Campground. I always feel like I’m on some island or on the west coast when I’m on the edge of these cliffs at the lake. Lots of green trees down below.
