My house was a mess, 4 kids deep, clutter piles unchecked for months, sleep regulated by newborn feeding patterns, and my body was fluffier than ever.

I would have given anything to reschedule the photo shoot.

But I didn't.

I knew my life was never going to be perfectly organized, and my body was never going to be the same as it was before kids. This is my life and I love it, as imperfect as it always will be. This home is full of love and snuggles and moments that I want my children to be able to hold on to forever.

Moms, don't wait for perfect to get in the photo. I'm so grateful I didn't. The same people who will cherish those photos are the ones who cherish you today exactly how you are. ❤

April is the month of the military child, and as my own children are currently awaiting a new chapter and new adventure, I couldn't let this month pass without acknowledging and paying respect to these resilient little people.

The official flower of the military child is the dandelion, and here is why:

Dandelions put down roots almost anywhere and it is almost impossible to destroy. It is an unpretentious plant, yet good looking. It is a survivor in a broad range of climates.
Military children bloom everywhere the winds carry them. They are hardy and upright. Their roots are strong, cultivated deeply in the culture of the Military, planted swiftly and surely. They’re ready to fly in the breezes that take them to new adventures, new lands, and new friends.
Military children are well-rounded, culturally aware, tolerant, and extremely resilient. They have learned from an early age that home is where their hearts are. That a good friend can be found in every corner of the world.
They learn that to survive means to adapt. That the door that closes one chapter of their life opens to a new and exciting adventure full of new friends and new experiences.  (Military Child Education Coalition, 2017).

Signs of life. 

If you are like me, sometimes you come to social media for a 'break' from the chaos of daily life. Rarely, however, does the endless scroll of perfectly staged homes and lives ever leave me feeling more fulfilled. As satisfying as it is to see a stranger's decluttered fridge filled with clear bins of rainbow assorted fruit, the truth is life with kids tends to get a little messy. I believe in making photos that show how beautiful real life is.

Every season of parenthood comes with its own sweetness, and there is something so special about those first days as a parent where life slows and speeds up all at once. Soon this family will be adding baby number two and even though bedtime will still be a tag team event, it will naturally look different than when both parents were able to focus all their attention on the new center of family life. Whether I am photographing a wedding or the day in the life of a family, I love capturing moments that connect multiple generations, like a grandfather meeting his granddaughter for the first time. The truth is this photograph will outlive the people in it, but their love and connection will live on beyond this moment and can be felt for generations to come.
