At what point does a beautiful photograph become something distinctly your own?

In this week's journal, The Space Between Beautiful and Mine, I reflect on artistic influence, the balance between abundance and restraint, and the sometimes frustrating process of developing a personal visual language.

From the dramatic influence of Baroque art to contemporary editorial photography, finding my artistic voice has been less about choosing a definitive style and more about discovering what remains unmistakably mine.

Perhaps the goal isn't simply to create something beautiful, but to create something that could only have come from you.

Does every photograph need to mean something?

As someone who loves conceptual photography, symbolism, mythology, and art history, I’ve spent a lot of time believing the answer was yes. Lately, I’ve been questioning that.

Sometimes I don’t have a story to tell. Sometimes I simply see an image in my head; a particular light, color, texture, garment, or feeling, and I want to make it exist.

This week’s journal is about the difference between concept and vision, and giving ourselves permission to create without forcing a deeper meaning onto everything we make.

Sometimes curiosity is enough. Sometimes beauty is enough. And sometimes the vision is enough.

What would you look like if there were no rules about who you were supposed to be?

Most of us become very good at being the version of ourselves everyday life requires. We show up for work, family, partners, responsibilities, and everything else that needs us. Somewhere along the way, though, we tend to leave less room for imagination, curiosity, and simply playing pretend.

This week’s journal is about what can happen when we make room for that again. A portrait session doesn’t have to document only the person everyone already knows. It can be a chance to explore something softer, stranger, more dramatic, more powerful—or simply something you’ve always wondered what it would feel like to become.

You don’t need to be a model, have a special occasion, or arrive with an elaborate concept. Curiosity is enough to start.
