prepping for maternity leave when you run your own business is - unique. as business owners we make a lot of sacrifices with our time and the days are long.
however, when there are big life changes, this is an opportunity to use our time freedom to design life how we want so here’s an inside look into the prep!
behind the scenes, I’ve been:
• building up business savings to support my full time pay even when I’m off
• prepping my team so weddings are seamless while I’m out
• meetings with our clients for weddings happening during my leave & led by my team
• adding a transition month after maternity leave so I can confidently ease back into work
logistically, it’s also meant:
• blocking time on my calendar for sneaks + emails during leave so it feels manageable, even on little sleep
• blocking family dates for the next year while already booking far into 2027
• planning childcare with flexibility, knowing I may decide to structure my days differently once he’s here
my maternity leave as a business owner looks like:
• 3 full months with the 4th month being transitional
• off work 3 weeks leading up to my due date to prep for labor (still answering emails and editing some sneaks from the weddings my team has, but off besides that)
• declining a lot of international weddings for this summer and recognizing I can always book more work but I won’t always get this season with my baby back
• designing a maternity leave that allowed me enough time to rest, bond, and adjust so that I can hit the ground running with my business for the last half of the year!
if you’ve navigated maternity leave as a creative, what actually helped you most? 🤍
