Robert Capa
Remembering 'Robert Capa' who died on this day, May the 25th, in 1954.
Or, to be more precise, remembering Endre ErnΕ Friedmann who died on that day.
So who was - or perhaps more correctly who were 'Robert Capa'?
Photographer and photojournalist Endre ErnΕ Friedmann - commonly known as 'Robert Capa' - was one of the founders of the Magnum photo-agency.
HOWEVER the title/name 'Robert Capa' was originally a working title/pseudonym used for publication purposes by both Friedmann AND his partner/fellow photographer Gerda Taro (Gerta Pohorylle)
The dual pseudonym was adopted because they recognised that their respective surnames could hinder their professional progress in the lucrative US & European markets as well as potentially compromise their safety in an increasingly politically unstable Europe.
The image of Friedmann shared here was taken by Taro, who died at the age of just 26, the first female photojournalist to have died covering a front line conflict - the Spanish Civil War.
It is now believed that a number of the early images published under the name 'Robert Capa' were the work of Taro.
Friedmann/Capa is regarded by many as one of the greatest war photographers ever - although, of course, controversy over authenticity has long dogged some of his images (the falling soldier being a prime example)
Friedmann (a.k.a Capa) never got over the death of Taro (an event he felt responsible for) it has been suggested that he continued with the Capa pseudonym to maintain a connection with her.
He was himself was killed, aged 40, by a landmine in Vietnam. ....
