Happy birthday to this guy! Scott Friedman, my brother-in-law, is exactly one week older than I am and married to my big sister, Heidi. (which obviously makes her a cradle robber, but that’s another story). Scott is probably the hardest working and most optimistic person I’ve ever met. In the 20+ years that I’ve known him I’ve watched him antagonize his sons (who are typically willing participants), work his ass off at our family cabin (the optimist who has the joy of working with my brother, Chris and me, the “pessimists”), and aggressively pursue the betterment of education for the state of Washington. He’s truly one of a kind and I count myself lucky to know him well and call him brother! Happy Birthday, old man!

The inner-sanctum of Jason Standley. Jason has been shaping some of the greatest wakeboards for nearly 30 years, first for Hyperlite and now for Ronix, the two greatest wakeboard companies ever (in my slightly biased opinion). I met J at Hyperlite in 1993 when I started as a junior graphic designer while he worked in R&D. I’ve been lucky enough to work with him in one capacity or another in all the years since.

In the 4 plus years I’ve been the Art Director & Photographer at SaltWorks, I’ve been able to develop and hone photographic skills I’d never really considered before. While these images may not depict anything excessively exciting, they do represent a level of knowledge I otherwise may not have.

On the morning of September 11, 2001 Kristin and I were both getting ready for work like any regular day. For reasons I will never understand, that morning I decided to turn the TV, which was not a part of my normal routine. The TV was instantly intense with the reporting of a plane having impacted the World Trade Center. No one knew what exactly was happening. I briefly stepped into the bathroom to tell Kristin about it and returned to the TV only to watch in horror as the second plane made impact, instantly illustrating that this was something much darker than a freak accident. As with most people over a certain age I will never forget the events of that day. With all of that said I had no idea what I might post today that could be of any substance. Kristin and I decided to go birdwatching in Discovery Park this morning and I figured I’d post some bird images from the day. It didn’t take long for me to find a new inspiration.

Happy Birthday, Matt Rini! These images are from a Radar Waterskis shoot in 2015 on the Spokane River Arm of Lake Roosevelt, my favorite shoot of all time!

Every now and then you get to spend some time with people who represent a very specific time in your life. Tonight was one of those nights. Jana Battin, Wendy Bogle and Gina Maio (left to right) have been friends of mine since I was 16 years old. Our individual adolescent experiences varied wildly. Jana, (my first true and longest lasting friend when I moved to Seattle from Denver - who also happened to introduce me to my wife) was my party friend. Wendy, (who, with our shared sense of humor, was and is the most hilarious dork I’ve ever known) was my high school band and North Shore Golf Course employee friend. Gina, (who always intimidated me with her true artistic talent and her early grasp on what loyalty and friendship should be) was my design and photography friend. While this shot was taken with an iPhone in a bar in Burien tonight, it’s as valuable and meaningful as any post I’ve made over the last several months. It represents not something short term but friendships I will have the rest of my life.

Every frame here, but one, is from a Ronix Wakeboard shoot in Florida in 2010. Although I’d been shooting for nearly 20 years at this point, this shoot very much felt like an “arrival” for me and set me on a course that I’ll never stray from. The last shot is one I took at Radar Lake a month ago. It’s Parks Bonifay and Brett Hargrave riding off on the back of a golf cart on their way to a party. While Parks is as well known to the watersports world as anyone, Brett is not. I pulled these images together because at the photoshoot all those years ago it was Brett who helped me more than anyone. Although I’d known and worked with these riders for years, I was nervous and felt out of my depth. It was Brett who set my mind at ease and helped me make it through the first few days, until I found my rhythm. When I saw Brett the last time, I told him how thankful I was for what he did for me. He remembered the shoot too and was so happy to know that it meant so much to me. We had an absolutely great conversation and reconnected after having not seen each other for quite some time. It’s a reminder to tell people how you feel, because you may never have the chance again. Rest in peace, Brett.
