Here’s a quick clip showing the excitement in the birding community around here yesterday.

This is a 12x slow motion view of a Swainson’s Warbler enjoying its favorite pastime: propping up leaves and picking out bugs to eat. I really like shooting slo mo of animals because I can see things after the fact that my bad eyes can’t begin to get a good look at in real time. I was able to get this guy eating five different types of bugs.

But why was this special? Because it was apparently the first one ever documented in the state of Minnesota! And in the woods in a park in Edina, in the middle of the twin cities! Down the path surrounded by small streams, hidden below all the million dollar homes.

It was first spotted by Jeremy Cushman, and I saw his post on a worldwide birding group, catching my eye when I saw “Hennepin county” mentioned! Thanks to him a lot of birders got out to see a “lifer” for their list.
