The Overlooked Detail...I recently had the opportunity to revisit this home. Last spring, I photographed it for a real estate listing, and the homeowner graciously welcomed me back so I could reshoot several spaces.

Real estate photography is often fast-paced—I sometimes refer to it as "run and gun." The goal is to capture the home quickly and efficiently. This visit was different. I could slow down and take my time to study the spaces for composition and lighting.

As I photographed the entryway, I noticed the trim detail beneath the staircase. It's something that had always been there, but during my first visit I was so focused on capturing the home quickly...I completely missed it. This time, I had the opportunity to include this detail that contributes to the home's character.

It’s a small thing, but it felt like a reminder...life works the same way. When we’re moving quickly, we tend to focus on the whole picture and lose sight of the details that make it beautiful.

The details are still there. We just have to slow down enough to notice.

As I have toured the beautiful homes of Edenton, one thing I've noticed is the artwork. Portraits, landscapes, abstracts, and family photographs fill the walls. Each piece collected over time and thoughtfully displayed throughout the home.

BEHIND THE SHIFT:
Recently, I made the shift from Park and Vine Photography to Park and Vine Studio — and I want to share why.

My goal was always to photograph interiors, and I had the opportunity to work with interior designers and document their work. But despite photographing beautifully designed spaces, I often walked away feeling discontent. After a season of setbacks and honest self-evaluation, I seriously considered quitting.

What changed my direction was a small moment: a conversation with a docent at Somerset Place, where I said, "If I could, I would go around and photograph historic spaces." Not long after, I photographed an Airbnb established in the 1800s. Would it be featured in a magazine or captured in a design roundup? No, but I left feeling content and connected to the work.

So I returned to what I love: historic homes and spaces — and the freedom to pursue passion projects.

These spaces are imperfect, worn, and have survived the harsh elements. Yet they are still standing — preserved, carrying a character that can only come from time, temperature, and pressure. In these historic homes and spaces, I could see myself in them.❤️

Until Edenton, I had never heard of Smilax vine.

You'll find it growing around entryways and porches like this one. In winter it moves inside — draped across mantles, tucked behind paintings, woven in alongside pine and cedar.

A simple vine. Deeply rooted.

An entryway moment...where we greet, where we part, where so much of life passes through. A reminder of how meaningful the in-between spaces can be.

A former cotton mill built in 1896, has been given a new life.
I have such an appreciation for those who choose to preservation over demolition. And although this space has changed, its history remains.

Unstyled: With this shift, I feel like it’s given me freedom in what I choose to capture. So much of what fills our feeds is planned, prepped, and styled — and there’s beauty in that. But there’s also something sacred about a moment left untouched.

A room as it is.
Nothing shifted or removed.
Nothing added or taken away.

There’s honesty in letting a space speak for itself, and I’m learning to lean into that more — to trust what’s already there

A small update from Park and Vine…

Park and Vine Photography is becoming Park and Vine Studio.

Over time, I’ve realized I’m most fulfilled—and the most connected—when I’m photographing historic homes, historic places, and the stories held within their walls. Park and Vine Studio allows me to focus more on personal work, passion projects, and the spaces I feel most drawn drawn to.

I’ll still be taking on select commissions with a focus on projects that align with this direction while leaving room for meaningful opportunities along the way.

Thank you for supporting Park and Vine through every version of its journey. I'm grateful for every client, every project and every person who has been a part of it.

The chipped paint, the uneven floors, the layers of history — none of it is perfect.

Life is a lot like this hallway. It's not always straight, the floors aren't always even, and there are layers of stories underneath the surface. But that's what makes it beautiful.

I'm learning that mistakes are just another layer...they don't define the story, they add character to it.
