I've started collecting black and white photos for a possible future project I've had in mind for a while. This image was taken in rural Dunklin County.

I've photographed center pivots many times over the years, but I've never been able to create something decent with one while it was at work. One of the beauties of rural America is being able to stand in the middle of a country road and not be in the way of much, if any, traffic. This gave me time to construct an idea, position myself just outside the radius of the water and wait. There were two main objectives: i wanted the arc of the water jet to somewhat mirror the shape of the puddle on the road and i was hoping that the falling droplets of water would catch some sunlight and become backlit. The plan mostly worked, enough that I deemed it worthy of being posted.

I noticed this image was possible during construction of the Saint Francis Healthcare System East Prairie clinic last year, but I underestimated how long it would take for me to get the right scenario to make it happen. The retention pond had to be pretty full, and I needed decent light before it dried up too much. Seems simple enough, but here we are nine months later. I'd still rather have had this scene in morning light, but sometimes you get what you get.

This photo has always spoke to me. A little house in the middle of nowhere Illinois with what seems like the storm of a lifetime bearing down on it. It has a feeling of helplessness to it. The cool thing is that we're looking at this image two years after it was taken. The storm passed, likely several storms since, and life went on. The storm always passes.
