Rebirth. Two years after a wildfire burned over 80,000 acres of forest in Jasper National Park, life returns to the land with this profusion of Heart-leaved Arnicas. Nearly a third of the structures in the Jasper townsite were destroyed. We saw many temporary housing trailers, but like nature the town is busy rebuilding.

Big animal in an even bigger environment. This shot of a Rocky Mountain Sheep shows the extent of its habitat in the Canadian Rockies. It ranges from the verdant valley floor for foraging to the tops of the craggy peaks to escape predators like grizzlies.

Spring has Sprung - finally! River valleys -- like the Knik River here -- are habitats teaming with plant and animal life. The meandering flow of the river over millennia deposited glacial silt rich in nutrients to support plants. Remnants of the river form muskeg, marsh, and ponds which are home to aquatic species, migrating songbirds and waterfowl, like the trumpeter swans below, beavers and otters, as well as larger species like moose.

"Morning has broken like the first morning
[Robin*] has spoken like the first bird
Praise for the singing, praise for the morning
Praise for them springing fresh from the world..."

This Christian hymn written by Eleanor Farjeon in the 1930s was made popular by Cat Stevens in 1971 with the song "Morning Has Broken." * In the hymn the original bird was a Blackbird.

I believe we are seeing robins in greater numbers these days in the north. They have been bringing cheer to our cold and cloudy spring this year.
