Pursuing a creative vision I've had for while...
Seeing the quarter inch thick frozen surface of the pond, I knew it would be cold. What was consuming me was the desire to make this happen. I didn't feel the cold... so distracted by the objective that my racing heart kept me warm... until I got out.

I remember my Dad today; it's the first time in my life I'm not able to talk to him on his birthday. I struggle to hope that I'm doing right by him as he watches me from up above. Last week I was able to recover his old, single shot 12ga sh***un. By no means fancy, A Harrington and Richardson that probably didn't even cost a hundred bucks. It served us well, killed a lot of dove and rabbits and went bang every single time. I was about 11years old when I shot it for the first time so having it again is a treasure. Yes, it needs a lot of smith work as it's been exposed to Florida humidity for many years but I don't need it for shooting anyway.

I don't know if it's true of all photographers but it definitely is for me, I find so much connection. So, when I find news of loss, it hurts. This particular one...I had more connection than just a single portrait session. She was a team horse. Yep, she carried Apogee Adventure racer Tasha Walrath through so many amazing runs in the arena in the 2025 barrel season and lived many beautiful years at Our Little Farm in Palmer . She was getting up in years and struggling, so it was found best to let her go peacefully, without struggle. Rest easy Spazz; it was a great run girl🙏

What a privilege it is to be able to wake up and try again! Over 20 years and still going. Anybody that tells you "oh, if you're in love, it's easy" is lying straight to your face! We get older, we change. It's how you adapt and continue to grow together that determines the outcome. I've not been easy and she's seen me in ways that I wish she never had to, but... we still keep showing up. Here's to another blessing of this life together. More to the story ⬇️

There's so much to these images for me. Over 4 years I've been witnessing this location, specifically in fall, as I drive by. It's set back off the side of the road a little bit and I've thought, "I bet that would be an amazing surrounding for a portrait session" (I was right). This was literally the first time I had ever pulled over and scouted it and... it was everything I had envisioned! It was only about 40° with some light rain so I had to move quick. I had the camera setup on tripod, exposure baselined, light metered, timer set; I ran out, setup and yelled "let's go!"

Spend your youth wondering what you'll do and where you'll go and then, one day, you're there. Although not without some massive trials, I've lived an incredible life, gone places I could have only dreamed of and stood, on the same trail, staring at animals that I had only known from books.
It's always amazing but so often, I miss how easily amazed I was at even the simplest things.
Every time I disappear with my camera, I'm looking for much more than the next image. I think I'm still searching for myself.
