When I arrived, she was unsure of herself. She wanted the epidural. She said she couldn’t do it. Each contraction was coming faster and harder. I could tell after 10 or 15 minutes that she was getting into transition. Every time she mentioned the epidural, her husband and I redirected her and kept validating her and encouraging her. We knew it was pointless because she was so close.

She was feeling pushy during her contractions and I knew that time was close. Then she looked at me and her husband and asked if we were lying to her! I never wanted anyone to believe me more than I did in that moment. I told her, “Oh girl - you’re so close! I wouldn’t lie to you!”

I reminded her that she wanted to labor in the tub and that now was a great time for that. She also utilized a fine tooth comb and some nitrous oxide. After some nudging she agreed to get in the tub.

Somewhere between then and the tub, the midwife found that she was complete and encouraged more pushing. In the next few minutes, baby was out and a look of pure elation, shock and disbelief and joy was on her face.

After less than an hour from my arrival at the hospital, baby was born. Her friend, sister, and husband all had so much pride in their eyes for her - and I did too. I loved when she looked at me for encouragement and confirmation. Even though she had moments of fear and doubt, she pushed through them and came out on top. She did the hard thing, she made it happen. So empowering, so inspiring, so unforgettable.

Some of my favorite family photos aren't taken during perfectly planned photo days.

They're taken during family vacations.

The week at the lake. The cousins staying up too late. The grandparents watching everyone play in the yard. The family that's rarely all together in one place.

I'll be in Bear Lake June 22–28 and would love to help you document your family's time together while you're already making memories.
