Yesterday afternoon the American Melody waited outside Lock and Dam 11 at Dubuque, looking far too elegant to be sitting still.
In a few days she'll depart St. Louis and begin a 16-day journey up the Ohio River toward Pittsburgh. The fare may start around ten thousand dollars, but yesterday the Mississippi River reminded everyone of an old truth.
The river keeps its own schedule.
The lock wasn't ready. The river wasn't in a hurry. So the American Melody rested quietly against the Iowa bluffs and waited her turn, much as riverboats have done for generations.
For all the modern comforts aboard, some things haven't changed much since Mark Twain's day. A riverboat may have an itinerary, but the river always gets the final word.
