Yesterday afternoon the American Melody waited outside Lock and Dam 11 at Dubuque, looking far too elegant to be sitting still.

In a few days she'll depart St. Louis and begin a 16-day journey up the Ohio River toward Pittsburgh. The fare may start around ten thousand dollars, but yesterday the Mississippi River reminded everyone of an old truth.

The river keeps its own schedule.

The lock wasn't ready. The river wasn't in a hurry. So the American Melody rested quietly against the Iowa bluffs and waited her turn, much as riverboats have done for generations.

For all the modern comforts aboard, some things haven't changed much since Mark Twain's day. A riverboat may have an itinerary, but the river always gets the final word.

Most Great Blue Herons are stalking shorelines, staring into the water, or taking off the moment they notice me.

This one chose a different assignment.

Standing quietly near the reeds, he looked less like a bird and more like part of the marsh itself. The water below did its best to copy every curve of his neck, while the dark grasses stood around him like an audience that had seen the show before.

Just a quick stop on the way home through Guttenberg. Nothing dramatic. No fish, no flight, no excitement. Just a heron, a reflection, and one of those scenes that makes you stop a little longer than you planned.

An evening east of Petersburg with miles of corn standing between here and the twin spires of Sts. Peter & Paul Church on the horizon.

The corn was growing taller by the minute, while the church was busy celebrating Sunday beyond the field. Both seemed content doing exactly what they were meant to do.

Out here, there isn't much excitement to report, and that's precisely the charm of it.

The mulberry tree spent all spring growing fruit. The Rose-breasted Grosbeak spent about five minutes offering a plan of his own.

Judging by the berry in his beak, negotiations were brief and heavily one-sided.

Had a little time to kill before picking up a Casey's pizza, so I swung by the rock quarry for a quick peak. Like most quick stops in nature, it turned into a longer visit than planned.

A bald eagle was on the move, carrying his dinner down to the shoreline and walking a good hundred feet with his dinner hanging from his beak.

The American Pelicans were making a wise decision staying on the far side of the pond.

As for the Killdeer, they carried on with business as usual. Nothing ever seems to bother a Killdeer.

It's all good in the Mississippi backwaters when a dragonfly decides to pause within lens reach. This male Common Whitetail sat just long enough for a photograph before getting back to the business of being a dragonfly.

A freshly broken snag at opened the buffet line, and this Red-bellied Woodpecker was first in line. Nature has a way of making something useful out of almost everything.

The air was perfectly still at Fountain Springs Park. Not a leaf moved. Not a blade of grass twitched. Along the edge of the road stood this wild parsnip, holding hundreds of tiny yellow flowers.

It's funny what you notice when the wind decides to take the night off.

For decades I've driven past the walk-in entrance to Twin Bridges Park without giving it much thought.

Yesterday, as I was leaving the park, I saw that entrance once again and finally decided to turn in.

The cardinal must have been expecting visitors, because there he was, waiting right at the start of the trail in a patch of green so bright it looked like spring had gathered all its colors in one place.

Some roads take years to travel, even when they're only a turn away.

The forecasted rain kept the campers away, and there wasn't a fisherman in sight.

Just the creek, the sunlight filtering through the trees, a couple of passing vehicles, and a peaceful Tuesday evening at Fountain Springs Park.

Some evenings don't need much more than that.
