I recently posted a series of photos I took during the COVID lockdown days of the birds that hung out near my house.

As I mentioned in that previous post, I’m not a wildlife/nature photographer—but sometimes I can still come away are some decent images of animals. Here are some shots I’ve gotten over the years of birds that weren’t kicking it in my yard.

Prior to the covid pandemic, I was shooting a lot of travel & landscape images, live bands & promo shots, and corporate events & headshots… all things which require interacting w/ folks and/or leaving the house. However when the lockdowns went into effect, everything I had been doing was suddenly put on an indefinite hold.

I was hungry to get out & shoot, but I couldn’t. I eventually found myself spending hours on the porch of my house, watching the various birds visiting the feeder & birdbath, or hanging out nearby. I am definitely not a wildlife photographer—I don’t have the gear for it & shooting birds at a feeder may be seen as cheating by folks that are legit bird/wildlife shooters—but I did enjoy grabbing the longest lens I had (a cheap, slow 70-300 f/4.5-5.6) & capturing what was going on in this tiny environment.

played a great show at the Cave back in early September shortly before releasing their latest album ‘Golden Reviser’. I had just retired the camera I’d been using for the past decade & this was the first show I shot while getting acclimated to the new one. It was a fun experience & a nice reminder of how great it is to live in a place overflowing with talented folks.

Busted out the 105mm f/2.8 macro for some experimentation w/ multiple exposures, colored gels on off-camera flashes, and some extreme close up shots. Most of these are of some leaves I collected months ago & let sit on my desk until they dried out. Then there’s Abe on a fiver, the pattern on a paper towel, a pot of boiling water, and an electrical outlet. What I like about shooting like this is how it reminds me that using different perspectives—in this case literally taking a closer look—can reveal some very interesting details in objects which might otherwise seem mundane. Applying that concept to how you approach life can be quite helpful; it can make a boring task you’re dreading seem much more tolerable; and it can help you not overlook people, places, and things that might have a lot more to them than you initially think.
