So many of y'all have been asking when I am doing another gold leaf workshop and the answer is THIS SPRING! But here is the catch: You have to do all the other juicy body image work that comes with it!

So excited to be offering this course at the Carrboro ArtsCenter where I took my first Darkroom Photography course in middle school šŸ˜ It's going to be amaaazing. Bring a friend or share with a friend who you know would love it. You know we will be making magic.

"Embodied Expression," a transformative 6-week photography course, guides students through self-discovery via self-portraits, journaling, and messy art.

Explore your body image, fostering a connection with your ever-changing self. Each week, delve into self-portraiture techniques, learning to visually express identity, emotions, and personal narrative. Instructor will provide prompts, guidance on technique, and encourage sensory exploration, creating images that authentically reflect your relationship with your body.

Students will also practice complementary written expression and messy art activities to release concepts of perfectionism and practice self-liberation, using various mediums like gelli plate transfer and gold leaf application to self-portraits.

Classes include juicy discussions, establishing a supportive community for your ongoing journey of body acceptance. Students at all phases of the ongoing body image journey welcome, come prepared with a journal and phone or camera for taking photos. All photography levels welcome.

MONSTERS AND GODDESSES

Every year on my birthday I do a self-portrait, but this year I didn’t because my 6-year-old fell out of a 2nd story window. Days spent in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit felt like forever because what even is time in the liminal space of sleep deprivation and the constant beeping of hospital life, marked by rounds and soggy food and CT scans. Somehow he is fine. I mean, none of us are fine. He cracked his skull, just like we always said he would if he jumped off of this or leaned on that. He has a TBI and that’s been a lot. Every doctor that sees us, even a month and a half later, can’t believe how *lucky* we are. But mostly we are just dealing with the reality that life is very very hard and fragile.

It felt ridiculous to do my annual self-portrait when I am so behind on everything, especially my client work. But making art is not a luxury and self-portraits can be a therapeutic tool, allowing yourself to truly see and feel all sides of yourself. Turning the camera on oneself allows you to explore. Ever since I turned 40, I realized that I don’t want to be a Goddess. No. I want to connect and heal with my Inner Monster. This summer/year/past few years hasn’t been easy. It has been beautiful, filled with joy and meaning, but also with loss and rage and sadness and grief. And Joy Magic can only go as deep as the true depths you allow yourself to plumb, otherwise it’s all just a show. We have to feel our feelings. That’s where the power is. So here is to 41 and making more embodied art and petrifying the patriarchy.

Thank you to for the assignment and for the buddy work and for letting me use the Medusa headpiece I got her for her birthday

Larissa Parson and I are stirring up mischief again, bringing our chaos goblin magic to Perfect Lovers on Saturday, June 24 for a 4-hour immersive workshop where we will move our bodies, get messy making art, and explore radical self love. It's going to be SO delicious!

Imagine what it would be like if you could love your body the way it deserves to be loved, be alive to the process of creation, and find deep joy exactly where you are right now. In this four-hour workshop, we'll get messy with art, move our bodies from a place of joy and exploration, and connect with each other in a way lifts us up collectively.

We live in a world that tells us to achieve perfection: perfect body, perfect home, a successful career, etc. We internalize this expectation of perfection and this leads to a sense of not being enough just as we are. No matter the size or shape of our bodies, it's never good enough, diet culture tells us. Our achievements are never enough, our creations are never enough.

Embracing imperfection is a radical act. When we say there's joy in the creation, being and doing, and letting it all be deliciously imperfect, we're letting go of perfectionism and patriarchy, and making space for our authentic selves. Join us! We're going to have an amazing time.

As a photographer and just as a person, I desperately believe in the importance of romantic love towards our friends. I believe in buying or growing or picking each other flowers, sprawling over each other in puppy piles, reading each other poetry, telling each other how spectacularly amazing we are, going on dates, or doing whatever it is that's the most meaningful to our friends.

Romantic friend love is joy and beauty and sorrow and honesty without brutality.

Most clients do their embodiment sessions solo, which is incredibly fitting and meaningful for so many people. But some clients choose to do embodiment photoshoots with friends or lovers, and the results are unreal. Whether your focus is love and healing towards yourself or love and empowerment in togetherness, we are here to capture that with you.
