Last night the Harvest Moon rises behind Lady Liberty in New York Harbor. 🌕🗽

September's full Moon appeared above the horizon with its warm, golden glow, creating one of those fleeting moments when an iconic American landmark and the night sky share the same frame.

The Moon isn't actually changing size.

From a distant viewpoint, a powerful telephoto lens compresses the enormous distance between the photographer, the Statue of Liberty and the Moon.

For a few moments, it looks almost close enough to touch.

The night sky offers photographers an up-close glimpse of the grandest celestial events — the September Harvest Moon.

According to The Farmer's Almanac, Saturday, Sept. 26 marks the Harvest Moon — the full moon that falls closest to the beginning of the 2026 fall equinox. Before electricity, the autumn moon was a focal point for farmers who relied on the moon's light to plan their harvesting times, hence it's "Harvest Moon" name.

Unlike other full moons, this one will still look bright the night after it peaks, so you'll still have a great chance to witness this rare celestial event.

A newly hatched octopus emerges from its egg case at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science in Miami, Florida. Because the eggs are laid over a few months, they hatch at different times. When they do, baby octopuses are only about the size of a pea.
