Happy Halloween! ๐ŸŽƒ These two pumpkin heads are getting engaged soon and decided to use their fun fall session to get some pics with the ring! Would you ever do a session like this?

(Before y'all start sliding in my DMs, yes, it's okay to post these now even though they're not engaged yet. I would NEVER break the news before my clients. Jacob and Katie said it was okay to post because they are not on social media anyway. Their official engagement is delayed due to a request from family, but they are already planning their May wedding!)

I'M BAAAAAAACCCCKKKKKK!!! Katie Distefano Photography has been on a bit of a pause this summer because there was so much transition going on in my life. Between graduating, traveling, moving, and starting a new job, I knew I wouldn't be able to give my clients 110%, so I closed my books for a few months to allow myself some space to breathe and enjoy this season. But I am so excited for fall wedding season and I can't wait to share more of what I've been photographing lately! However, first things first: there are some posts I need to catch up on, like this one! Please join me in wishing Rachel + Kuda a very happy (and a very very belated) anniversary!!! I hope your second year of marriage is even better than your first! Sending love, always โค๏ธ

๐Ÿฉต SIX ๐Ÿฉต YEARS ๐Ÿฉต

Six years together and we have not once celebrated on our actual anniversary. We have been apart for some or all of every single summer since we started dating in 2017. The first two summers Thomas was working as a Ranger at Philmont. Cell service was spotty while he was in the New Mexico wilderness, but we did our best! The next two summers I was at Camp Don Lee during the pandemic. To reduce the risk of infection, staff stayed on camp property during our time off for most of those two summers. Last summer I was working at a church in Wilmington and Thomas and I were able to see each other a lot! It was great! Except for the fact that the ONE WEEK I was in the Outer Banks chaperoning a youth mission trip was the week of our anniversary. Oops. This summer Thomas is once again living in the wilderness, this time the green tunnel that is the Appalachian Trail. I like to tease him that he'd rather walk from Georgia to Maine than walk down the aisle, though that's not entirely true (I hope). ๐Ÿ˜œ It's been a funny bit, this whole never-being-together-for-our-anniversary thing, but I think it's getting a little old. Next summer, we are redeeming July 13th. It's gonna be OUR DAY. We're gonna throw a big party, I'm gonna wear a white dress, and we are gonna tie the knot so dang tight that nothing can separate it for the rest of time. Unless of course we somehow end up apart in the summer of 2025 in which case I will huff and puff and roll my eyes so hard that they just might fall right out of my head. But I'm not worried about 2025 just yet. All I care about right now is July 13th, 2024. One year until our seventh anniversary, 365 days until wedding day, and I can't think of any better way to spend it than at the altar TOGETHER (finally!) declaring our love before God and our loved ones. Thomas Culpepper, does forever sound good to you? Happy anniversary! I LOVE YOU!!!

edit: it has come to my attention that 2024 is a leap year and therefore July 13th, 2024 is actually 366 days away ๐Ÿ™„ we've waited this long; what's another day I guess?

Happy belated anniversary, Katie + Anna!

I've been out of office for an entire month now (and technically I'm not back until next week), but as pride month comes to a close and the supreme court rules against LGBTQIA+ rights, I just had to pop in and make one thing abundantly clear: you are welcome here. Whether you know me as photographer, pastor, or friend, you are loved and celebrated and safe here. And if I have ever or do ever make you feel anything but loved and celebrated and safe, I want you to tell me so I can do better. It matters to me that KDP is an inclusive space for all who have been marginalized. I love you and I stand with you as we work together to make the whole world a more beautiful, colorful place. โค๏ธ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’œ

You don't have to take your grad pics during grad season! I know everyone wants to be able to post on graduation day, but there are huge benefits to waiting until after graduation to book your session. For one thing, campus is completely empty! During regular grad season, I promote sunrise sessions as the way to have a portrait experience without having to wait in lines. But after graduation, you can get that exact same experience in the evening. Sunrise sessions are worth it, but nobody really wants to not only be awake but be their most gorgeous self before the sun is even up. Second, your body will feel better after the stress of the semester, and that shows up in photos! If you're anything like me, stress and sleep deprivation can really do a number on you physically. Between the bags under my eyes, the bloating, and the stress acne, let's just say I don't look my best in the last month of the semester, and it's okay if you don't either. Give yourself some time to unwind after finishing those last finals and then have a stress-free portrait session over the summer! Lastly, it is NEVER too late to celebrate. Graduating is a huge accomplishment, and it's okay to celebrate it after the fact. If you weren't able to book your grad session before graduation, you can and should still reach out and book it now! I graduated six weeks ago and I'm just now posting my grad photos. During the pandemic, I was taking grad photos for people who had graduated 18 months ago. Life happens! It doesn't matter when you do them; you and your loved ones will cherish these photos forever because graduation is always a milestone worth celebrating. Let's get you on the books so we can honor your hard work this summer!

I'm getting dressed for today's wedding and my favorite sneakers are broken ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ They're my n**e platform sneakers and the ball of the foot in the left shoe has sunken in like my foot has pushed through the sole... How does that even happen??? I'm very perplexed and super bummed because I wear them all the time (maybe that's how it happens?) and they are my go-to for long wedding days and for traveling because they're cute and comfortable. So I guess it's time for new shoes! I've been eyeballing some Vejas ever since Nohemi and Rachael and Brooke brought them for their grad session ๐Ÿ‘€ should I take the plunge? Which ones are your favs? Please send me all your cute comfy sneaker recs!!!

If you ask me whether I prefer individual or group sessions, my answer will completely depend on whichever type I just photographed! Individual sessions give us so much freedom. The entire time is spent perfecting the poses and prompts for just one person. I don't have to worry about getting matching individual images for every member of the group. Every single image is exactly what's most flattering for just one person. But group sessions are soooooo much fun! Group sessions bring out such natural emotions and candid poses. Being able to play off one another makes everyone so comfortable. The smiles and laughter are absolutely infectious. I was on an individual session kick the last few weeks of grad season but then I photographed these gorgeous gals and suddenly I was team group sessions again! What kind of session do you want for your grad pics? Let me know in the comments! (And check out my post from yesterday to find out how you can have the best of both worlds if you don't want to choose ๐Ÿ˜‰)

Lemme let you in on a little secret... Y'all are sleeping on adding mini sessions to your packages!!! Mini sessions are the perfect way to add people to your session without having to pay for another separate session. If you want pics with your besties, SO, family, pets, etc., but also want to make sure you get a full gallery of images of yourself, adding a mini session is the most economical way to include them! I do not sell mini sessions individually, but I do allow clients to add them to existing packages. It saves me time and you money when you add mini sessions to your package, so be sure to inquire about them when you book your session! These individuals of Liam are actually from a mini session added onto a group grad session with his law school pals. He got to spend the evening with his favorite people and he got a handful of extra individual images in the final gallery for a fraction of the price of a full session! What a steal!
