I got to shoot another over under water shot today but this time it was a special occasion! My son Landon got to go on his first fly fishing lesson and he landed a couple of really nice rainbow trout.
The guide was nice enough to leave the fish on the line long enough for me to snap a few pics.
I never really know what I’ve shot with these, but it’s fun to go through each shot to see what I got!
God had painted the perfect day for us today. Light rain and fog, giving way to breaking clouds and sunshine at the end of the trip. It seemed the fish in the guide’s net kept getting bigger and bigger throughout the day until Landon finally hooked this monster. The photo is difficult to tell in terms of scale, but this fish was a little over 20” long.
I had the guide hold a flash for me, aimed at the fish so I could get a little extra pop of light down through the water. What a fun outing hit us both!

When the weather alerts are going off on my phone, it means "Go outside and look up." Yesterday I was delighted to see waves of mammatus clouds as an ominous backdrop over an otherwise calm and sunny day on the pasture. The storm that was dropping tennis ball sized hail up in Atoka north of me hadn't made it far enough south yet to block the sun. I had a window of about 20 minutes or so to get a shot, so I took my camera and walked out to my favorite tree and made it my subject once again. We actually dodged this storm as it raked us but went off to our southeast. This is yet another example of captivating beauty being closely associated with danger. God's wonder taking shape in such mysterious and wonderful ways right in front of our eyes!

Two years ago I had the privilege and rare opportunity to witness and shoot the total solar eclipse! Quite possibly the most surreal landscape image I’ve ever shot, I really fought hard for this one.
With only a few minutes of totality to work with, it was a game of figuring it out on the fly, while trying to also be present in the moment to marvel at God’s wondrous design!

Have you ever been to "No Man's Land?" The Oklahoma panhandle isn't exactly on many lists for top vacation spots, but that's exactly where my wife and I took our kids camping this Spring Break. Black Mesa State Park is a certified dark sky location, especially when humidity is low and the moon is dark. Most of the conditions were perfect for us, so we made the LONG trek to the highest points in the state for the opportunity to explore a new area and see some really dark skies.

Astronomy groups from Dallas/ Fort Worth were there too on this new moon occasion and they let us look at nebulas and galaxies through some really impressive reflector telescopes that were so big we had to climb up on a step ladder to look through them. While my family were being entertained by the telescope toting astronomers, I made a solo hike to the Rock Garden Trail in the park and set up for this shot. What I love so much about astrophotography is the peaceful, quiet time where I'm forced to be still, slow down and just spend time in the wonder of God's amazing creation. I got the foreground just after the sun set over my right shoulder and then brought out my new star tracker to align with the North Star and capture the Milky Way once it got darker. Here's my view of the night sky facing south in this unique destination you can only see at Black Mesa State Perk.

I haven’t posted as many photos in recent months as I typically do and here’s the reason why: I’ve been working on another passion project… a new book!
Head on over to my new page and please also follow me there for updates. My book, “Find Your Gold Thread” is my mission to help people discover their God - given true calling and work with individuals to realign their heart with their work. Here's a shot from yesterday's sunset over the farm pond. It's been trying to thaw out for several days but still had a sheet of ice covering part of it. Winter clouds often make for some of the most colorful sunsets!

I made my kids excessively late for school a couple mornings ago trying to get these shots! You'll have to click on the 2 super wide panoramas and zoom in, then it's still a challenge to see what's really there.
Last week as I was trying to get my kids out the door for school, I grabbed my coffee and keys and went outside to start my truck. Then I looked up. The sky stopped me in my tracks. It was a sea of rippled clouds overhead, on fire with vibrant color. God was really showing off!
I ran to my office and pretty much threw my drone up in the air. I didn't stop to check the battery level. I didn't wait for all the satellites to connect. I just took off and started flying, shooting and trying to even figure out how to get it all in.
I took several frames and swept the scene with a couple of panoramas, trying to capture what I could see over my head.
With each passing minute the color changed firs from pinks and purples to vibrant orange and yellow. the sun remained obscured by broken clouds in the distance but the ripples of color just weren't quitting. At one point I thought to myself, "I should have left 10 minutes ago and I'm still flying my drone!"
I shot a few last shots and then brought the drone back down.
On the drive to school I kept feeding Margo lines to tell her teachers. I said, "Tell them your crazy dad was flying his drone, trying to get a photo of the sunrise and made me late." I'm pretty sure that excuse hasn't been used too often so they'd have to know every word of it was true!!

It was a bitterly cold morning on Broken Bow Lake this morning but it's been so long since I've gone out for a shoot I wasn't about to give up on getting at least one shot! The wind coming out of the north was making my fingers go numb and kicking up some little waves. It took me half an hour to warm up from being out behind my tripod this morning but it was great to be back out again!
