**OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT**

Temporary Ferry Transportation Service Now in Operation
While repairs and reconstruction of the damaged roadway are underway, temporary ferry transportation services are now operational to maintain access between Hatteras Island and the mainland.

The ferry service will operate between **Pea Island and the Marc Basnight Bridge area**, with an estimated crossing time of just **2 minutes**.

**All ferry rides are completely FREE** for both residents and visitors.

Dare County announces a proposed major infrastructure initiative aimed at preventing future highway washouts and improving long-term transportation safety along North Carolina Highway 12 (NC 12).

Under the proposed plan, a new elevated coastal bridge would be constructed to bypass sections of NC 12 that are particularly vulnerable to ocean overwash, severe coastal storms, flooding, and shoreline erosion.

The proposed bridge would extend over the ocean before reconnecting with the existing highway, providing a more resilient transportation route for residents, visitors, emergency services, and local businesses.

**Estimated Project Cost:** Approximately $12 billion

**Proposed Construction Start:** January 2027
