I love when a family shows up to their beach family photo session ready to play and have some fun! My favorite photos I’ve taken are never the ones where everyone is looking at the camera and smiling. While those are still great and always something I aim to get for you- they don’t pull on my heart strings quite like an authentic, candid portrait of your family in their element. Playing, laughing, tickling, spinning, running, twirling. These are the kinds of images that you’ll look back on one day and feel something.

Capturing heartfelt, genuine family moments is something I’m so passionate about. I loved this session with the Colburn’s because their gallery is full of connection and playfulness. If these images speak to you, too, I’d love to chat more!

I’m often asked “when is the best time to get newborn photos done?” I love helping mamas decide on a time frame and weigh all the options. But at the end of the day; that’s a decision only you can make.

As a photographer, my personal preference for newborn photos is within those first couple weeks. Baby is usually easy to please, relatively content, their skin color and texture is nice and calm, and they are so sweet and sleepy. Those reasons mean we can create the typical newborn portraits and it also makes my job of needing to rearrange them much easier.

But as a mom, I know prepping yourself and your family for a photo session a couple weeks after having a baby isn’t always feasible. Two weeks after giving birth to my first I had mastitis for the second time and hadn’t really even seen the light of day. On the other hand, six days after giving birth to my third, I was throwing a birthday party for our other daughter, and getting our family ready to leave for a week long vacation at the beach. Both of those versions of myself would’ve made a different decision on when I wanted to have newborn photos taken.

Each mom, postpartum experience, and decision will be unique depending on how you feel or what you envision for your photos. I suggest we discuss the options and put a date on the calendar before baby arrives, but I only take a certain amount of newborn sessions a month to ensure flexibility.

There’s only one thing that will remain the same no matter when you schedule your photos, and that’s my guarantee that you’ll receive timeless portraits of your family that capture the most fleeting time in your life. Something you will never, ever regret having no matter when you decide to get them done 🫶🏼

I had so much fun taking these maternity photos for my sweet friend Liz in the studio. Such a gorgeous almost mom of TWO 🫶🏼

We shot this in the same space my motherhood sessions will take place. The lighting is so beautiful in here and imagine it filled with different shades of pink flowers. This is truly going to be such a wonderful event to celebrate moms!

The motherhood mini sessions are perfect for pregnancy announcement photos, maternity photos, a milestone birthday for your kids, or just an opportunity to get some updated photos of you with your favorite little (or big) people. I love all the fall maternity sessions I’ve done lately because it means welcoming a sweet baby just in time for the holidays. My own girls are spring/ summer birthdays and were no longer newborns around the holiday season. I’m picturing you mamas cuddled up with your precious baby asleep on your chest next to a Christmas tree. Silent night playing in the background. A lit fireplace. Family all around. And it’s enough to give me baby fever!! These next couple of months will be such a special time in your lives.

There are many different reasons to get some family photos done. This family has TWO! They’re expecting a new baby brother or sister in several weeks, and they are about to demolish their current home to build a new one that better suits their growing family. They wanted an in-home family session to celebrate all the blessings this home has brought them in the past few years. Change can be bittersweet! While the future ahead for them looks full of love and excitement, it was such an honor to help them say goodbye to this special home filled with so many of their favorite family memories.
