You expect LA to stay silent after ICE raids? What did you think would happen when ICE come to LA and ruffle our feathers? Voices were heard, cars were burn, places were tagged, but not one business was looted we had riot medics helping with the injuries, waters were passed and looked out for everyone. We’re not there to fight anyone but the corrupt system.

Different island vibe. It’s not always palm trees n mangos by the beach but it’s still home. Can’t wait to be back.

This place has a special place in my heart. When we were young my dad used to have a sari sari store where we basically sell everything non food related from t shirts, toys, battery, almost like Walmart without food. So once or twice a year my dad would take us here to stock up for the season. I remember this place being was dirty and wet. Just imagine Chinatown or Santee alley in dtla where you can but literally anything but with no regulations and homelessness. We would run and chase my dad around here as he goes to each store to find things to bring back to our shop. Now I’m doing it again but with my mum as she haggle for discount when buying dried fish to bring back home. This time the place is somewhat cleaner and organized. I can’t say I miss this place but it was pretty cool to be here again.

Palengke vibe. An open air wet market where you can find literally everything you need to start your day. From live chicken, butchered pork, fresh fish, fruits, and vegetables from your local farm all laid out on the open street for you to bring home. In a western eye places like this might look extreme but it is very lovely place full of friendly people and great food.

Fun fact when I was a wittle boy my family had a general store right in the middle of the palengke. Places like this have a special place in my my heart.

This unplanned visit back home has been a huge emotional rollercoaster. Instead of the typical island fun this time it’s more serious family time. My mum n I originally planned to visit grandma since she is now bedridden from the stroke. We tried to go back on December but the expensive holiday price made us push our trip on the end of February. Two days before our flight we found out my mums father passed away. The unexpected event made everything worst. Not only my mum is coming home to a sick mother but now to burry her father. Mum hasn’t been back since we migrated to LA in 01 and that was also the last time she seen her family in person. Coming home was definitely overwhelming. Excited to be back in the motherland and depressed from the passing of gramps. My mum is also the eldest so she is now head of the family. Handling everything from the funeral to taking care of the financial part of helping the house and rest of the family. I know my mum was a tough lady but seeing this first hand gave me more respect and love to my mum. This is the longest I’ve hung out with her and I’m learning a lot more on how strong and a leader she is to her family. I’m also learning a lot more on this side of the family which is pretty awesome. I got another week here so let’s see how it goes.
